Various - new super star, STPR, hype

During the running "live updates" of 2008 STPR, there was a mention that Kyle would have an in-car video of the new rough stages on You Tube.
I really wanted to see the stage for myself so I have kept a You Tube search on my machine every day since.
Today, a new video arrived but it wasn't SS! or SS2 but the infamous SS4 that was botched/stopped/canceled/FUBARd.

The title and tags for this are so embarrassing, must be Leon's girlfriend must have taken on the PR for Sarasin.

If you watch at 3:35, you'll see how a car parked at the apex wouldn't be a welcome sight, especially in the dust of a car you may think is pulling to the left to let you by.

I don't see any issues with either excerpt. None of the information is inaccurate or over the top. With Kyle's goal of driving rally cars for a living this kind of promotion is key. I have seen him....the kid has talent and personality and enough humility to be well liked.

So do hundreds of other people worldwide who are light years faster.
Matt, Travis struggles to make it into the bottom of the second third of thin WRC fields.(That is to say his WRC results so far have been around the top of the lower 1/3 of the entries)
He has talent and personality and is well liked as well, but he's not fast by any standards other than our local standards, so calling a kid who has a couple of results down the ways from Travis a "Superstar" and a "phenomenon" does a massive insult to both language and to those who are by broader standards the ours actually making noteworthy results.

It's plain embarrassing.

If you look on a more International forum such as www.rallyforum.com you'll see that even the so called (by those over here) "sharp end of the stick" is not particularly well regarded.

Beating you or me does not make somebody a "superstar".

Claims like that, just like the other absurdly inflated claims just makes the modest results look even more pale.

John, like I said on the phone the other day....for a great promotional/publicity program for RA, they need to pick 12 of the top non-professional/grassroots rally drivers.....create a 12 episode TV show called 'Who Wants to Be a Rally Driver?'

Pit the 12 guys against each other, eliminations, 'challenges' all that crap...bring in celebrity drivers, a week a Tim O'Niels, etc, etc.....each week someone gets voted off by the viewers.....last man standing gets a full ride from (insert sponsor here) for the next year to see if a 'normal guy' with a full ride can compete against TP and the lot.

there's an out-of-the-box idea to 'save' rally

Identically prepared cars??? And personally I despise the idea of spec classes, but in this case, it would be a good thing. RWD, 5 speed manual, 1 set of tires per event, 2 liter turbo motor. If theres an unequal amount of male/female entrants, then so be it. Equal opportunity my ass, just because someone has a set of tits and ovaries doesn't necessarily mean they're better than someone else, conversely, just because someone has a set of testicles hanging between their thighs doesn't make them Mr Hero rally car driver either.

sure why not? If they can do it in Barbados (of all places) why not here?

start out in NA 2wd.....get past a few challenges, upgrade cars....etc....final guys get to drive in AWD cars/whatever.

who has people who know people in Hollywood? somebody pitch it to those reality TV guys...

The "hype" is probably just the byproduct of Kyle's excited highschool friend who takes video and writes stuff for him. Its not like they have professionals that do this for them. If you were 18 or 19, into rally, and one of your highschool buddies was competing in the xgames dont you think you'd get a little hyped up and excited about it?

What I want to know is how much they had to pay to be able to use the old KI Sayer airbase for tarmac testing. Its the best autox site for hundreds of miles (75mph+ in a 100hp vw) and is impossible to get permission for because its now an active commercial airport. Too bad I'm stuck at the shop tomorrow while our other crew guy gets to go out there to drop a transmission off to whiskers.

Sure, but when I was in high school, I had met and spent a day and an evening talking like normal people with a pile of current and ex World Champions in both 250 and 500 classes. Torsten Hallman was a 4 times World Champion in 250 class, Bengt Aberg had just won his first World Championship, Roger deCoster had just won Belgian Championship 500 and was to go on to win 5 time the 500 World Championship crown.
They were modest to a man, all of them.

If I knew way back in 1969 what local was and that there was a "rest of the world' way back when we only had magazines and Newspapers and knew the difference between a couple of local high placings and calling somebody a "SUPERSTAR", the whoever the fuck
it is who is writing this shit and embarrassing Sarasin, and embarrassing the already pretty embarrassing US Rallyscene OUGHT to know better
