What type of jack do you have in your car?

I modified the stock VW jack that came with my A2 Golf but it's still a bit sketchy! What do you carry in your rally car?

Thanks, Robert.

nissan or subaru scissor jack

On the VW it won't quite be tall enough if you have a proper rally suspension so you will have to extend its base a little bit, or find a handy rock or log to set the jack on when you're changing a tire winking smiley

Robert has the right idea, wrong source.

Chris get's a fail and gets his pee-pee whacked, BAILIFF!!!!

Dudes, the old VW Beetle Bilstein jack is the thing to have.
Easy to extend the length, if is clean its easy to extend down to the ground so you are immediately lifting as soon as you start jacking, instead of twirling around liftling air.

If for some reason you're married to the sciccors jack idea pre-about 77 Saab 99 and 96 jacks are twice as sturdy as the Jap crap.
Just like the cars! Ha!

I have the stock scisors jack with a lugnut welded on, that way we can use the impact wrench to lift the car.

A quick search on ebay for "bilstein jack" returns this "Bilstein quick lift rally jack"

And also these state-side jacks
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsche-356-912-911-Bilstein-jack_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ34209QQihZ006QQitemZ160254716827QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Seems like those would work especially well with some sill holes for pin-style jackstands.

I've been late to a control after changing a flat between stages with a scissor jack. It has a large metal base welded to it and a ratchet welded to the screwer.

An aluminum Harbor Freight floor jack.
That and two spares has saved me enough to keep it -
even if it didn't balance the car out.

I use a stock Mitsu scissor jack with a steel plate welded under the foot and a lug nut welded to where the crank arm used to go. The 2 holes drilled to the diagonal corners of the plate make it easy to mount the jack in the car using Dzus Slide Latches and lifting the car using the impact gun is a snap. It added about a pound and a half extra weight to the whole thing but I gather 10 times that in dirt and mud under the car in a few stages anyways.

In the late 80's RalliART gave us the bag jack which was very light and relatively simple to operate, the only time we used it then went without a glitch, it lifted the car up very quickly, but in my opinion it was cumbersome to put it back in the car with the hose and all. I remember not enjoying getting blasted in the face with the exhaust gases that were used to fill the bag up when it was time to lower the car.

You guys with the electric impact guns are putting a lot of faith in what might just let ya down at the wrong time.
Braver and more optimistic than me.

I had a Habor Freight gun in the trunk. It fell apart (while sitting in the trunk)during it's first event, which was Perce Neige. I think the crappy plastic got brittle in the cold. I got a Dewalt and it has served me well for 15 events.

But, I also carry manual backup. Never used it.

BTDT. We built an impact-driven jack setup and then, BEFORE WE USED IT IN A RALLY, decided to do a field test: full rig, helmets & harnesses on, start stopwatch. Kieran hops out and runs back to put up triangles while I grab the spare and jack. Pop it under the car and promptly strip the jack's spiral gear when I try to wind it with the impact wrench. END OF RALLY if it were a rally. We do still carry an impact wrench but don't use it on the jack.

I lent my rig to a fellow competitor at Rallye-BDC who's jack malfunctioned. My rig worked and got him back in the game. He beat me for the class win. Hey, he was faster on the stages and I couldn't see ignoring his dilemna on a transit.

I also lent struts to two other teams, one of which beat me overall.

I can use the good karma.
