If fact, that's one of the surest ways to lose that job.I can claim that as the "0" car that got punched a tree at STPR one year. At least I was right seat so I didn't get all the blame. At least one former opening car driver is no longer invited as it appeared that he was having too much fun and not doing his job of checking course security. We've also been known in the past to placate a celebrity or sponsor by giving them a opening car jobs. That rarely happens any more because too many screw-ups occurred. That delays the rally and causes really bad relations with the rally's paying customers.
The duties of the opening cars were listed earlier. In the Midwest, the opening vehicle instructions run about 4 pages. Each crew needs to be able to troubleshoot controls, drop into any open stage position as needed, be a gentle ambassador for the event if needed, and angry voice when not. We typically also run a fast or Med sweep in the Midwest as well. Those crews need to have a Ham and at least a first responder on board.
We checked at LSPR and the opening crews had over 150 years of accumulated stage rally experience between the six opening vehicles. Every crew had at least one former competitor. You might find it be easier to slot into an "advance" car position.
They are out 2- 3hours ahead of the rally checking or erecting banner tape. It could be used to help the team get used to working together. You'd get to see road conditions and surface conditions- but you'd never see the deep ruts you'll see in low seed starts. You'd also get no speed because of frequent stops. It's a job that needs to be done and fewer people who want it as the job hasn't the "prestige" of the opening cars. Become known there and when an opening car position occurs ,you're in a better position than an unknown.
That a possible back door to your problem. Other posters have given you other options. Run NASA, remove a turbo or a driveshaft for RA . However you do it, watch out for the red mist. Red mist occurs often under any condition and absolutely is triggered by the first glimpse of taillights ahead.

Thanks for that bit of info Bruce, very helpful. I'll look into a not-so-popular helper position to get my foot in the door smiling smiley I like the red mist comment as well winking smiley
