So here's something kind of cool.
This first video is of Matti Rantanen in a Honda Civic Type R Group N car. He won the Finnish N3 title with the car in 2006 and is now moved up to a N4 Evo.
http://www.mattirantanen.net/mattirantanen-kouvola2006-ek3.mpg

The second video is Mikko Kauppinen in his Toyota Starlet Group F car. We should all know who he is by now as he is quite inspiring to watch. He's won many Group F events and may have had the title in one year or another. Regardless he hauls ass.
http://www.rengaskanava.fi/mikakiracing/kouvola2006-ek3.mpg

Now the important thing to note is that both these guys are fast. Both cars are top spec for their respective classes. One is FWD, one is RWD. Both in-cars are of Kouvola Stage 3 from 2006. The files are both around 50 MB and take a long time to download due to the few thousand miles and an ocean. But I think it's worth the wait. For those that don't want to wait, here's a pic of each.

Thoughts on the videos would be interesting to hear.

Toyota Starlet gr. F specs:

Engine
- DTA-engine control unit
- Max. RPM 8050
- Max. power 190hv / 7300 r/min
- Max. torque 200+nm / 5900 r/min

Transmission
- 5-speed dogbox made by Lampola
- Liquid clutch
- Volvo rear axle
- 5,48 and 5,85 interventions
- 2-part cardan

Suspension in front
- Dampers by Rallysystems Oy with special and separate liquid tanks and adjustments.
- Mikakiracing assistanse arms. Fully adjustable (group-A)

Suspension rear:
- Dampering by Öhlings, 3 way
- Rear axle by Volvo (240-series). Includes Starlet stylish and fully adjustable links produced by Mikakiracing LTD

Brakes:
- In front Wilwood 4-piston
- In rear Wilwood 2-piston
- Tilton preassure adjustment system
- Hydraulic handbrake

Other:
- Meters and interior by Sparco
- Meters by Auto Meter
- Weight 860 kg
- Top speed in snow: 190km/h
- Top speed in gravel: 175km/h

Couldn't find much for specs on the Honda, but I'm fairly certain it's top spec and it's for sale on ralli.net for 25,000 Euros. Here's the info. I can interpret, Motec, Japan spec, 6.33 final drive, and Ohlins suspension.

Myydään Suomenmestaruus auto kaikilla parhailla osilla!
-motec, japan spec, 6,33 välitys, wti-lukko, hydr.kässäri, sparcon-penkit, öhlins-alusta
-kaupan päälle ajokoulutus suomenmestarin opastuksella!
-Herätelkää vakavaraiset sponssit tekemään pääomasijoitus, niin jää omat rahat ajamiseen...!
Auto on kaikilta osin kv-luokitusten mukainen joten ei muutakuin ilmoittautumaan Neste-rallin JWR:luokkaan ja ajamaan itsensä tallipääliköiden tietoisuuteen...!
ps. auto on alv vähennyskelpoinen!

Just checked the stage times.
The Honda was 4 seconds faster at 4:56 vs. 5:00.
So performance wise these are close in this stage.

Watching the videos side by side it looks like the honda had a tad more top speed and was just slightly faster through some of the corners. The starlet was ahead until about 1:30 in where they were about even again after that first long straight, then the honda edged a little bit more but it was that last long section before the finish that sealed the deal.

Sure you can. There are literally dozens and dozens of guys in Sweden, and dozens and dozens in Finland who do just what these guys are doing.

Go find the links to Toni Gardemeister and his 2wd rwd BMW GpF car and see what a ERC driver who could build anything he wants to builds when he's spending his own money.
And watch how fast it is.
(And compare it to the in-car stuff from North America).
