Doesn't handle like what? Won't straighten out if you overcook it and end up sideways? Doesn't get sideways? You never overcook it?

I have spun my AWD, RWD and FWD rally cars more than once. The biggest one was in the AWD car when I lost it big time on a f'ing straight... I can report they all spin just fine, even FWD with the foot firmly pressed on the go faster pedal.

How very true about FWD not working till 8/10 + however, and I agree FWD is farily stable and not all that intrested on looping unless you lift - never lift in a turn.

FWD *is* easier to drive fast, 'cause you only have to flick the car around as a convenience (how quick can you turn the wheel/how much do you hate your CVs). But you can definitely spin 'en, and mashing the throttle doesn't always help...

That pretty much sums it up for me to. Currently driving a Mk 2 Golf, I'm serious fast when I really get a hold of myself, my balls and wrap my mind around the "I can't die"-mantra. Sadly I'm not good enough at that, so there's too long between me being serious fast...
And yeah... don't lift in a turn! At least it's true for Golves... :-).

I have previously owned a Mk 2 Escort - and the Golf is just better for me. Sure, having the rear hang out was a bit of fun, but I'm obsessed when it comes to racing lines (we're on tarmac over here), and the FWD Gold just works better for me in this aspect. Also, I trust it more...

I went RWD at RWVa and the car drove great and the times didn't suffer too badly.
Starts were painful as were uphills out of hairpins.
I spun once adding too much gas too soon in 2nd.
3rd gear and up drove the same as I'm used to.

Broke an axle on one of those uphills and got a tow back and switched to FWD but Rusty wanted to bail so we quit.
(he has some sort of sickness {that hasn't been diagnosed} I was unaware of before we went)
I was kind of interested in a back-to-back test but not too sure it was prudent - we already got one tow back. Rusty decided for me.

RWD was very expensive over 4wd.
To finish the rally we would have destroyed 6 rear tires that would have lasted two events each in 4wd.
To make it bulletproof would cost a grand for a good big diff, big axles and hubs to fit.
Not cost effective just to finish 3rd/4th in MaxAttack.

DNF cost, tire cost, waste of good axle = 4wd for me.

Might that have to do with the total absence of either horsepower or torque from the wheezy (I've driven stockers) 2.5 NA motor?

Well that's because the rear diff at 160mm is a poor joke, and the axles weren't ever intended to be rwd ONLY, blame yourself.
My stock Ford 4x4 front diff is bigger than that, stock rear is 190mm.

You only proved what you probably knew already.

I do wonder, however, if you DID beef up the Subaru for RWD, with the right diff and axles, how it would fare against some of the MaxAttackers?

I believe Randy was running 2nd amongst maxattackers right between Kyle and the Wimpey boys. With the misfortune of both it probably would have been a very very close podium.

Please note that there was only a mere 22 second or so difference between Sarasin and the Wimpeys

Oh yeah, sitting on the starts and following the big guys going thru 5 gears and spinning all the way when we bog and wheeze thru 1-1/2 gears in the same section is painful too but I'm used to that.
Having the rear wheels slip and slide and the car going absolutely no where is even MORE painful. I was doing starts like on ice and it still wouldn't move. Now I had TOO MUCH! power.

Yeah, I could have went out and found an old STi rear end setup but I was hoping to make it thru one event - maybe - and had the front set up along if I could have limped it back. I more expected chipping a couple teeth or having some big clunks rather than a clean snap of the shaft that left us dead in the water.

Well, it was a good experience and I didn't waste too much money on it. The car was probably capable of beating Lurch at the rate he was (not) going but between Rusty being rusty, me pulling the intercom wire apart a few times and not listening to Rusty when he was right, we should have just been able to stay ahead of the TypeR for 4th.
If someone wanted to do it again, I think it could work with some more prep and a couple bucks for some bigger stuff.

Actually, we had a 1:44 lead over Randy after Fridays stages and were quicker on every stage....
