USUK Racing Rally Optimized LED Light Bars - Interest Level?
June 27, 2013 11:41AM
We are developing a couple of LED light bar units that are designed for rally car use and would like to get a feel for the level of interest in the community.

They are based on industry leading, high intensity, 10 watt CREE LEDs producing an amazing 80+ lumen per watt. Low power draw, robust and fully waterproof (IP68).

The two kits planned are:

USUK-LLB-48
  • 6 lamp single row
  • 4,800+ lumen output
  • Combination euro-beam and spot-beam pattern.
  • Dimensions (approx): 250mm x 60mm x 100mm (about 10 x 2.4 x 4 inches)
  • Weight (approx): 2kg (4.4lbs)
  • Switch, fuse, relay, wiring included.
  • Expected price: $250 plus shipping
USUK-LLB-96
  • 12 lamp single row
  • 9,600+ lumen output
  • Combination euro-beam and spot-beam pattern.
  • Dimensions (approx): 500mm x 60mm x 100mm (about 20 x 2.4 x 4 inches)
  • Weight (approx): 3.5kg (7.7lbs)
  • Switch, fuse, relay, wiring included.
  • Expected price: $350 plus shipping

They will be similar to this example, except that the USUK Racing units will probably have a white housing:

So, if these were available, would you be interested? Please PM me or email to swright@usukracing.com with your thoughts.

Thank you so much.

I heard great things from people using those....so, if it is the same kind, yes I am interested by the smaller unit.

would be interesting to see the difference between those, and the Wolf bars a handful of CA guys are using (like these: http://www.wolfledsystems.com/product_p/0310-d.htm)

any idea on "beam distance" like is given in Wolf's specs?

edited to add:
Looks like a pretty close match to Wolf's S-series stuff: http://www.wolfledsystems.com/S_Systems_s/1844.htm

6 x 5w CREE for $200, 10 x 5w CREE for $280...

Hmm. Hard to say. I have no idea how they determine beam distance - seems like a made up number to me. Would you be able to see our 9,600 lumen 12-lamp bar from 3,775 feet? Yes. smiling smiley

In testing at Sandblast we were lighting up road and trees well beyond my driving abilities. I do know that we do not need any kind of flood type lenses - the eurobeam has sufficient near-field illumination and spread for our needs in US rally. We are adding spots into the mix to push out the far-field illumination.

I know it's purely subjective but we were told that our lights were by far the brightest running at the STPR Super Special Stage.

Simon

Edited to fix lumen error and typo.

Except you're comparing 2,250 lumen with 4,800 lumen and 3,750 with 9,600. Edit: 5w vs 10w per LED.

Simon, are you running the six or the twelve light unit?

What other lights are you running besides the above?

I don't know that much about lighting, but I was under the impression that the led's- while great at closer distances, just don't cut it for distance.

Perhaps that's NOT the case?

And yes-I'm interested in these.....

Mike,

Our test mule is running 2 banks of four lamp and ten lamp bars plus stock lights...

It's hard to tell, from inside the car, whether the stock lights are on or off!

More lighting than I probably need. Which led us to the configurations we're developing: six and twelve lamp units. I would probably go with 2 twelve lamp bars wired independently for new lighting now. The six lamp bars would be good as a supplement to some existing lighting.

The effective distance was an issue with earlier technologies (3 and 5 watt) but, in our opinion, the current generations of 10 watt CREE LEDs are competitive with traditional lighting.

Edit: fixed pic size.

I am interested. Are you concerned about your mounting impeding your cooling airflow?

Tony asked a similar question over on that other place. I said...

Good question. I was a bit concerned about that too. A good portion of our air comes in through the lower opening in the bumper but our frame seems open enough to allow air flow too. I monitored coolant temp and noticed no change in normal stage operation.

Sandblast 2013 was the roll-out for our LED Light Bars.

We are considering developing a line of USUK Racing sunglasses for spectating at night when we're on stage. smiling smiley
