I am looking for a couple of reference books on building race car/rally cars. Suspension/engine/chassis prep.

Does anybody have any good recommendations?

All these Carroll Smith books....

Carroll Smith Books

Used them all the time when I started road racing. Tons of excellent info.

I'll second Sean's advice. Many of the techniques cross disciplines of racing easily. How to hotrod your Datsun or Volkswagen or build a stock car, tons of info that can be used for lots of builds. The factory racing parts manuals from Ford, Chrylser, Nismo, Mazda had great info also.

What? Ignore those guys! Don't you know the ONLY reference book allowed around here is the Ford Escort Preparation Manual? ALL information about rally cars must com from there!!!

I've never even seen one of those. Seen one or two of these: How to Prepare the Sierra for Motorsport.

Yah, Randy Zimmer has a book he put together from his experience building subarus.
I think there's a recent link on the other site...

Really, seriously what are you looking for? Leisure time reading? Avoiding working on a car?

Get Randy's book or to save you money: Everything stock is fine, just drop in a 2.5 and bolt on some suspension and that's all that's needed. Nothing needs to be done.

You getting rid of the Dodge?

That race and rally car source book is god awful, please don't buy it. There is literally 4 pages of information related to rally cars. Go read the reviews of that book on amazon.

If your looking for prep info, the Ford Motorsport Sierra & Escort books are great & can be easily applied to whatever you're planning on building.

If you just want to nerd out on rally cars the Reinhard Klein book "Rally Cars" is very good & is pretty detailed for being a picture book.

Ever looked thru that book, Grant?
99% its fapfap fap fap fap roadrace fapping..

Ironically, considering the troll-y comments above, aside from a nice review of why the Saab 96 was such a soooooooper bitchin car, the most useful thing in the whole book was this:

The most useful thing in the whole book for a rally person is the gushing praise of the Ford book that the increasingly erratic Dave Clark sneeringly dismisses, the book Staniforth refers to as "156 solid gold pages"... Its down toward the bottom of 2nd page, first column.....

So obviously it must be a useless book if all it says is that Ford Escort rally Preparation" is SOLID GOLD, either that or somebody's comments continue to be mostly contentless jibes.

I am considering building a car myself this winter in the confines of my new shop. I tend to try to read EVERYTHING I can get my grubby little paws on when undertaking a new endeavor. The Dodge will continue to be in the stable and once I get my wife back to full time status at home, things will return to some semblance of normalcy on the homestead.

thanks for the info

Ha, ha! The pot calling the kettle black, love it. Please tell me where I sneeringly dismissed it. I must have missed that. It's a great book and very informative.

My comment was just a contentless jibe. Have you really completely lost your sense of humor, John?
