What do YOU wear under your racesuit?

Yes... tres personal question I know... but I'm about to invest in double-layer nomex (SFI 3.2A/5) racesuit and am curious what others are wearing underneath.

Already have the nomex bellaclava, socks, and FIA race boots (Oakley CarbonX... got a great deal on a new pair, pretty comfy to wear around except for the still sole).

Of course, I'm volunteering to sit in the silly seat... so seeing that I have no control over the car (or ultimate control over the fallible device controlling the car), I'm trying to decide how much I need to wear.

Already kicking myself for not investing in the Peltor helmet... cause trying to retrofit into my Mag4 is a PITA!

How stinking hot am I going to be on a warm August day?

I wore a set of nomex underwear at BRS in October last year. It was a touch warm. If it had been any warmer out I definitely would have wanted to ditch them.

Anybody ever had luck with like underarmor or some other sort of athletic, moisture wicking type stuff?

I wear the full stuff - socks, long underwear, turtleneck, balaclava. Yeah, it's really hot, but the stuff was designed to be used as a system, so I do. Makes me feel 1% less exposed to the risks...

I been wearing driving suits for like half my life....admittedly only nomex for the last couple years.

but...i generally just wear a pair for Shorts, and t-shirt. I can tell you that a recent trend in the karting ranks is the "underarmour" stuff that is made to wear under hockey equipment. You can also buy "dry-fit" stuff from snowboard shops, and other sporting goods places.

wearing full nomex underwear you are going to be REALLY hot in august. especially under a 2 layer suit.

Really depends how affraid of fire you are. I know it's different in the states but up here her you can still get away with el-cheapo race suits, which kinda tells me that CARS does not see a great risk of fire/burns in a rally car.

Buy and wear what you are comfortable with.

To me the nomex stuff does get a little itchy.

I dunno what that "underarmour" stuff you're talking about is, but all my hockey underclothes are some kind of synthetic stuff that I worry about melting in a fire.

I wouldn't wear any of that plastic, nylon, rayon, poly stuff like underarmour under my suit. It would melt to your skin if you have a fire...

Cotton T-shirt or a thin wool layer if it is REALLY cold out.

I was seriously burned, roasted the meat of my lower left leg in a gasoline fire at 10. I have it because I had on cotton Army fatigue pants, cotton long underwear which the elastic was tired so it was above the calf, and cotton socks which were sagging to the ankles.
A month in the best burn ward in the country at the time and they saved the leg.
Most of that month was cleaning and fighting infection and trying to get clean meat to graft to.

Would not have happen had there been nylon or synthectic plastic shit melted into the flesh.
The leg would have been amputated.
It was obvious even to a 10 year old.

Yeah I've been tempted to wear some of the new age fabrics like dri-fit or whatever, that I use to run in because they really do work to keep you cool. But because of my profession I've seen some really horrendous burns. I feel safe enough in my 2 layer suit with some cotton underwear and a cotton wife-beater. I figure the suits rated for 9 seconds of exposure to xxx temp and if I'm in a burning car for over 9 seconds I've got BIGGER problems.

Gone fishing

Thankfully the Car-be-que is a rarity.
I hope that I'm never in one that decides that it will be fun to bake the contents of the car at high temperature.

Death by fire just does not make my top ten.

That said; I find the sweatsuit to be quite uncomfortable during the summer. It is cotton next to my skin and special attention paid to the car so that fire will not be part of the fun and games especially when it all goes wrong.

Overkill is consistently more fun

Just as a side note, HANS devices over coolshirts can leave bruises on your shoulderblades. When your belts are tight, the HANS presses on the tubing on the coolshirt. It's not too bad at first, but over several hours it can become slightly uncomfortable.

Hmm... wonder what would happen if you contacted coolshirts and asked them to not route the piping over the shoulders. Of course, if you've already invested in the shirt...

Might make a nice revision to their product line, with the specific notation that its ideal for HANS setups.
