Taken from another topic. Why dont people run lights like this anymore? Was there a reason to run them up high near the mirrors? Is it just not leagal to run them so high anymore? And lasltey would there be a benifit to run them. Since i am building a 510 I always thought it would be cool to have the car look like they did in the past and put a light up high.

I believe I read somewhere 100 years ago that the Kenyan Federation had a requirement for lights there. EVERYBODY had them at Safari and nobody used them there any other event--‘cept maybe Bandama Rally aka Côte d'Ivoire..

Robert Gobright aka "rallymech" could probably have some insight since he spent the last years of Highschool and 3 years after wrenching on rally cars in Nairobi in the last 80s/early 90s...but he's too busy working on roadrace and crazy projects to even say Hi anymore.

No one does 'cause they're not allowed. Too lazy to look it up but something to the effect that they can't be above the bottom of the windshield....

Yeah here "base of windscreen" is what its been since time began..
I wuz 'splainning whyt they had them at Safari---and nowhere else.

Wonder what motors they used for Safari in those things. I spent some (slightly beer sodden) time poking and talking to Per Eklund, Lars-Eirk Torph (RIP) and the Thorzelius twins--famous co-drivers---back at Olympus WRC 1987--the huge fiasco year... That year for USA they used the VG30 and the cars were all booti-ful and I mentioned how nice the paint had been done and Eklund---it was his fault we were all beered up at 2 in the afternoon---looks at me and goes cross-eyed and said "Oh yeah they are pretty---and you'll have plenty of time to look at them and marvel how pretty because THEY ARE THAT SLOW!!!!"

I asked and they said he and Torph had their own personal Lancia Delta Intergrale Group N cars..normal old Fiat 8v twin cam 2,0 with a Garrett T3 (later I found its the same turbo and ECU and all the senors and junk as on the Sierra Cosworth things I finally got) and they said the stock 8v 2.0 turbo was quote "WAAAAAAAAAAAAY WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY faster than those 3.0 V6s".

2.0 and turbo, its magic.

I would imagine that glareback off of the hood would be righteously bad...

Maybe its so when you smoosh off all the lights on the front of the car going through a giant mud bog, you still have some lights to get through the rest of the 70 mile stage.

I think I may have driven that car once. All rally cars in Kenya had those lights. I don't know if it was required or if everyone just felt they needed them. On the long high speed runs at night you needed all the light you could get. Hitting an elephant at 160 kph is fatal for all involved!

John, I was just thinking about you and the girls. I am working mega hours moving our shop into larger building.

Mounted on door mirrors are extra high-energy lights. These are kept on at all times and are much brighter than ordinary headlights. Their purpose is to make car more visible to others even when travelling in dust cloud.

I thought it was so the locals didn't mistake the rally cars for the public bus...

The lights at the base of the windshield were to warn/scare off the animals. Zebras, gazelles, elephants, beasts that would do bad things to your car if you hit them. I'm surprised nobody mentioned this yet. I remember specifically this being explained on the Safari Rally coverage back in the '80's.

I seem to remember reading the lights were low so that you could see shadows of objects ahead of you, while lights mounted high keep the shadows behind the object and make details harder to see. Sound familiar to anyone?
