RWD vs. AWD
March 08, 2014 08:05AM
So I got my friends video and put it side-by-side for one of the stages. Great view of 2 drivers going 100% in two different platforms.

I would absolutely love the traction of AWD off of the start line, but RWD is definitely more sideways and rewarding.

Isn't that what most people with any experience have been saying for the last 20 years???

Isn't that what an honest conclusion would be when watching our events???

One day when all the guys who just buy buy buy all the band-aids for the turbo awd car are old, they'll know it was the CAR that drove then...or anybody---not they who drove the car.

Cool video.

One thing that was interesting is you guys were very similar in times and locations, but just the camera position makes conte look like he's going much faster.

That was a good drive! Could really see how much quicker you entered the corners.

That was the Beetle being used for sound. My mic messed up at the race, and didn't record a damn thing for intercom or car audio. Just a nice sizzle the entire time. yawning smiley

I do love this side-by-side. For the record the AWD car is my old open light car. 1994 Legacy with a 2.2L stock NA engine, made maybe 100whp or less. It was an interesting battle for sure! Slow AWD vs a mid-power RWD. Mark definitely is the better driver, having done this for much longer than I have. I may be renting him my new open class Legacy with proper diffs and a gearbox for Ojibwe, so will be interesting to see how he does in that.

AWD can be fun. Just gotta drive the SHIT out of it. Which it seems 80% of the guys out there aren't doing at all.

Now John, when are you going to post the side by side of Stage 6? thumbs up

I'm so on the fence about this. Matt's Leggy is hardly the pointy end of the field. I would go so far as to say the bug would cost more to duplicate. So we are still trying to go fast, yes? A challenge is fun, as long as it doesn't turn intentionally handicapping ones self.John's the better driver and was slower. Matt was hardly puttering around on a Sunday afternoon drive. John was really throwing the wheel around, sometime on the edge of loosing his hand position.

I have less than 1000 miles under my belt, but have yet to run into being on stage and thinking "God, this is boring." Seb laid all those WRC championships on the rest of the world by driving boring.

Ever consider the wheelbase of a Beetle? The steering?
Some cars when well balanced can do pretty good with a 94.5" wheelbase...
With the engine hanging out way waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay past the beck spindle, and as tall as it is, the VW isn't the most balanced car in the world.

Ever heard anybody suggest that there's a range of things that make lifer easier to go really fast??
Or the phrase Horses for courses?

the awd does seem a bit more forgiving in some reguards

rally on!

We did a big new years' day winter drive two years ago, lots of twisty snow covered forest roads, like dream stages. I led in a BMW because I could come into corner slow to make sure it was clear and then hammer down and slide around the end of the corner. To have fun in a AWD or FWD car you had to pitch it in really early and aggressively, not safe on a closed road without a safe lead car.

You have to really drive it like you want to crash to really be fast in a AWD car.

Cool video, and looks like a fun little piece of road.

Boring vs Not....it's all a matter of perspective.
