center diff in Open cars?
March 31, 2014 05:23PM
On a different site, there's been some discussion of the center diff (or what is now in the center) of WRC cars. This made me wonder whether Open-class in North American rally still have center differentials or a front-default Haldex. Does anyone know? (Of course, the specific question is what's in Block's car, but a general answer would be better.) Thanks.

Bwa ha ha ha. Funny one John.

Lots of 'open class' car types on here, just because you don't approve doesn't mean they don't exist.

I know lots of them. Talk to them. Build things for them. I know a LOT of them a lot better than you..They don't give a shit what's in WRC cars diffs, they have their own diffs to worry about.
But fap away if you want. Have a mutual fap party you two. You 2 are some of North America's leading technical ex-spurts.

Current vw wrc cars are a locked center with fly off hand brake to de-couple. Most US open class cars are just warmed over clubman GpN cars with custom maps for the stock electronic center differential. I'm sure the srtusa monsters are s1x prodrive setups.

Uhhhh... no thanks.

FYI, a bit of reading comprehension goes a long way.
Toby's question was really about Open class cars in the US, not about WRC at all... (his question is comes out of a discussion, eleswhere, about WRC diffs)

I know the details of a few US Open-class cars and they are all as you say: conventional center diff with a computer-controlled limited-slip device. And I don't think that there's a Haldex for Scoobies. So I guess my question should have been the parenthetical: does Block's car have a Haldex?

My reading comprehension is just fine as is comprehension of who is bringing up what and to what end, the point being more fap fest pontification which may as well be how many angles can dance on the head of a pin-head.
The answer is : so what? Who cares.

I understood that both the Subaru GRC and the Subaru Rally America Open Class car use a Sadev set up similarly.

I can speak a little about the Mitsubishi Diffs in relation to control. I am no expert so YMMV

WRC cars (as of 2011) had to throw out the active center diff control systems. From what I understand it is a set split torque system with Mechanical LSD type front and rear diffs.

In North America we really have a very open rule set for some extreme monsters if people wanted to spend the money on it. For example Mr. Blocks M-Sport car here in North America is able to run a larger engine, and use all the fun toys long banned in the WRC if he wanted to. Ken most likely (conjecture) does not have active center diffs on the car he runs here, due to the fact it is a WRC based platform. M-Sport spent millions to develop a mechanical diff package that is far and away more effective in comparison to commercially available Active Center Diffs found in our current road/rally cars. I wonder what Vermont is using?????

Anyway, the average "Open" car around here such as the STI and Evo both use a Haldex type active center diffs. Allot of people just use the stock diff control ECU's or have stepped up a re-flashed/mapped ECU or to aftermarket controllers such as the Motec MCD where you can setup slip tables and load based compensation blah blah blah etc etc ect. That in itself is a fine art. Many hours or reading available on the inter-tubes, and allot of it is complete BS. Use caution. For example some people have it burnt in their heads that the Mitsu torque is variable front to rear. Reality is that the torque split is fixed front to rear. I have not spent much time reading about the STI, its not what we race so I am not to familiar with it.

I believe current WRC cars handbrake are a mechanical manual center clutch release for the rear. in addition to hydro brake of rear calipers.

I always thought Flyoff brakes were just butchered OEM e-brake mods (removal of auto latch)
