Another JVL convert...
March 10, 2008 06:35PM
It's been more than a month since the accident and my anus has never been so sore. This guy's insurance company is trying to stick it to me hard and dry. Today I filed a complaint with the dept and scheduled an appointment with the attorney.

In the meantime, I'm going to probably buy an 86 245 GL Wagon in Tucson Wednesday night. Any pointers or things I should look out for? This will be my daily driver while the Galant gets fixed. Perhaps a "Plan B" to fall back onto if things go to hell with the Galant or something.

Cheers!

Is the problem the big gaping hole in the ass structurally?

Because the hatch can be replaced with fibre glass if weight is an issue

Haha.

The problem is that this kid's insurance carrier, one Safeway Insurance, seems to think that, because there is oil on the top of the valve cover and I didn't install the timing belt cover up top, the $1100 worth of receipts I sent them to prove that I rebuilt the engine don't mean dick.

They offered me $1300 for the Galant, minus a $200 buy back.

I sent them 12 pages of documentation showing the average selling price for all (45) GVR4s listed for sale on GalantVR4.org is almost 4800, and even went so far as to provide specific links to (20) GVR4s in similar condition to mine selling for $3500-$4500.

They come back with $1900 and no buy back fee.

Fuck them. I've filed a complaint with the AZ Dept of Insurance Consumer Affairs Division and have an appointment set for the 20th with the family attorney. If the Galant has to wear a salvage title from now on, then their insured can pay for my roll cage.

So, since my Talon refuses to part ways with the EVAP leak code which has kept me from registering it in AZ for the last seven years, I'm 80% through with dropping a stock engine into it in preparation for selling it. This Volvo will be my daily driver that I hope will smoothly and quietly get me to and from work while getting more than 300 miles to a tank of gas. (*cough* Galant *cough*)

It's an 86 245 GL Wagon in burgundy. Paint is faded, seats are torn (but covered), dash has a couple cracks (but is covered), and the owner has recently had the belts, fluids, transmission mounts, and tires replaced. This is his sixth Volvo and he fancies himself something of a fanatic. He says the brick runs smoothly, tracks straight and true, and shifts like butter (slushbox).

It's going to stay 95% stock and serve daily driver duty for the long haul. If I do anything to it, I will tint the windows, install a nice stereo, and just enjoy driving a reliable, stock car.

Perhaps, one day down the road, I will hang a snail on it or something, but for now, I get something to just change the oil and drive while I build the Galant into a proper rally car.

This is pretty much what it looks like, only more faded and used. I'm stoked. My sig on turbobricks.net is something like "John V sent me."

Wait. Does the one your getting have those headlights?
The single square and single rounds are by far the best headlight styles, reverse respectively.

Close. I suspect those pictured above are e-code or something. This is a picture of the actual car I'm going to see. I'm waiting on more, but the guy is impressing me with his answering all my questions the right way. So the plan is to go check it out and probably buy it Wednesday night.

Curious about the odometer stopping, but I've got some searching to do on the brick forum. (I'm considering a Brick Tamland reference from Anchorman. Perhaps "TAMLAND?"winking smiley

Odo. Seller says it stopped turning at 232k, but it's closer to 250k at this point. I have to do some searching over there to see how about fixing that.

Odo's usually break a tooth when people hit the tripometer reset while in motion. Has happened to about 30% of the 240's I've run across. There are people out there that sell the gears (an example: http://www.hyperocity.com/volvo240/volvoodometer.htm).

250k is not a big deal. My 86 245 turned 320k last week. AC will be a bitch in that car where you live. Go to FCPGroton.com and get the R134 retro kit. Then decide whether killing yourself is a better alternative to replacing the condenser. That's as bad as changing the blower motor or the heater core. If you do, change the blower motor, too. At the factory, the 240 is assembled around the blower motor.

Why does everyone think that? Is this from an actual performance perspective, or from an aesthetic perspective? I've never been able to figure that one out. The rounds, yeah, they look great. The single squares to me look ugly as can be, and compared to the four squares, put out about as much light as a bic lighter. My favorite is the four-squares, obviously, from both perspectives. I don't see how a single-fixture lamp can possibly be better, when you have to compromise the aim of the high- and low-beams. With four individual lamps, you can adjust them to the point where it takes some serious OEM HID's (Mitsu EVO's and Mazda RX8's, in my experience) to get the same visibility.

Of course, my aesthetic senses could be skewed, as I actually prefer the 700 series to the 200 series. Some call it the 747 K-car, but mine weighs less than a corvette (only 2900 lbs) and K-cars are really cool, especially with a sleeper turbo engine in them, a la Spirit RT or the like....

welcome to brickworld!!

I could care less about lighting performance from regular headlights. It's purely aesthetic. The four squares are less ugly than the stock Merkur headlights, but that's about it. smiling smiley

Speaking of lighting performance...

These things put out some decent light, but the way they're currently aimed and yellowed, it's like driving with fog lights on alone. Sheesh! Talked the owner fown $200 on account of excessive oil leakage near the deck (head gasket?) and a non-functioning temp gauge in the cluster. It's got other issues (below), but so far, I'm pretty stocked. This is going to hopefully be one helluva nice daily driver. 30mpg here I come!

Issues:
- oil leak
- no high beams (relay?)
- pathetic headlights
- temp gauge failure (checking harness to sending unit below intake runner)

Otherwise, it tracks nice, rides firm but smooth, shifts crisply for a slushbox, and all the power windows work flawlessly.

Stoked.
