Fastest thing on Earth. Almost winking smiley
September 11, 2008 10:06AM
It's first run was yesterday 9-10-08 and it was successful!

It's the largest Proton Accelerator in the World, by leaps and bounds. S.L.A.C. has nothing on this bad boy! CERN (Swisse and Franc) was successful today and guiding its first protons down the tunnel. Collisions to occur OCT 21!!! We will get insights into antimatter or darkmatter and how the early universe was formed.

more info on the LHC! It's not linear it's a 18 mile loop!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider

Most specific to the LHC…

The Beams of Protons impart their energy into the Magnets. While operating, the total energy stored in the magnets is 10 GJ (equivalent to 2.4 tons of TNT)

These immense energies are even more impressive considering how little matter is carrying it: under nominal operating conditions (2,808 bunches per beam, 1.15×1011 protons per bunch), the beam pipes contain 1.0×10-9 gram of hydrogen, which, in standard conditions for temperature and pressure, would fill the volume of one grain of fine sand.

So that’s ~3000 bunches with about a trillion protons in each one being slingshoted around by electromagnetic force along 18 miles of track in a solid beam.

Each particle speeds past the start finish line 11,000 times every second. 660,000 RPM.

All of this weighs only .0000000001 of a gram of hydrogen. Which is the lightest atom on the periodic table.

This has got to be the fastest thing on earth, well besides light. winking smiley 99.999999% of light speed to be exact.

The Protons travel in opposite directions and collisions can occur at 4 intersection points.

It’s like a trainwreck of two particles traveling nearly lightspeed that weigh almost nothing.

When the bunches cross each other collisions are possible. The 3000 bunches (of ~1 trillion protons each) cross each others paths about every 50 nanoseconds and it can take from 10 up to 24 hours for collisions to occur.

So that’s an occurance ratio of next to nothing. The change for a collision is very small. You’re talking about 3000 trillion particles whizzing right past narrowly missing each other 86 trillion times a day.

A beam is made of 3000 bunches of 1 trillion proton atoms in each. This beam follows a 18 mile long track.

The Beam would fill the volume of one grain of fine sand in standard conditions for temperature and pressure,

The Beams of Protons impart their energy into the Magnets lining the tunnel. While operating, the total energy stored in the magnets is 10 GJ (equivalent to 2.4 tons of TNT)

That much energy from such a teeenie tiny particle.

The tunnel is kept at minus 450 degrees F. That’s 3.5 warmer than absolute 0, the temperature where all atoms cease to move.

Personally I am excited if we find out if theree is such a thing as a Higgs Boson particle, the so called god particle.

It's all so super exciting! This is 60 years of research and planning and building and it's all comming down to this moment and we'll find out if scientists have been right this whole time or if it's time to rethink the whole thing.

History channel ran a series on the contstruction of this thing back in 06. It was pretty amazing.

Although some scientists claim this could be the beginning of the end of the earth as it could create a blackhole that will swallow the entire planet.....

OMG! The world is going to end!

Says here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/2650665/Legal-bid-to-stop-CERN-atom-smasher-from-destroying-the-world.html

"Professor Rössler claims that, in the worst case scenario, the earth could be sucked inside out within four years of a mini black hole forming. "

In 4 years its 2012. 4 years and 2 months after the particles collide is dec 21 2012! The mayans were right!

Oh noooooooos!

You're building a rally car; you already have your own black hole smiling smiley

Well, A friend just told me there is an helium leak (or something like that) that will delay the experiment 2 month.

That was the missing part for the end of the world theory. Now it matches up to the day!

oh nooooooooooooooooosssss oh noooooooooosssssssss
