Albert,

My Hungarian grandfather's last name was "Szucs" when he arrived at Ellis Island. It was pronounced "Zooch", but the immigration guys knew American's didn't care about that so they kindly changed it to Smith for him. Your last name is "Kun".... must be some stories there too.

But, let's leave bad names like "spic" behind us as well, eh?

Beside, Carlos Sainz is from Espana. And yeah he's tough as nails.

oops, sorry. No insult intended. My grampa was a refugee from spain, during the civil war, also a tough old nut. So spic is a term of endearment.

By the way, my dad came from Hungary too. (also as a refugee; ask me how I feel about immigration policy) but he tried to kick them in the balls when they wanted to change his name at Ellis island. You should hear what I call Hungarians!

Al,

Just between us Magyars, I'd like to hear (grin). Please send PM!

BTW, I was in Spain in '64. Franco was still in power. Most Spaniards seemed to liked him by then and lots of one-armed old guys had government jobs. But, we still got booted out of a youth hostle in San Sebastian with 5-minutes notice because the Franco Youth (patterned after Hitler Youth) rolled into town unannounced and wanted the hostle for themselves.

Oooops.... now back to the DAKAR in South America.

Yes. It should be called "el raid de sur america" or whatever it should be. But I haven't been paying attention to it.

why did they even call it dakar when it only ended there? It should ve been named like it used to be: Paris-dakar ("start"winking smiley-("finish"winking smiley

I watched a couple days of it last weekend, two different shows, wasn't impressed with the coverage of either (but couldn't tell you what they were, only that they were downloaded then put on a dvd). Too many interviews, too much walking around the service areas, almost no action.

I can see changing it to just dakar after they started moving the start around, when it always started in paris and always ended at dakar then paris-dakar made sense

but once it started moving around, meh, why change the whole name every few years, just call it dakar, I was fine with that, it still ended there no matter where it started

but calling it dakar when dakar seems to be no part of the event at all? that just seems a little wacky to me
