For JV, who once stopped mid conversation to listen to a child in a neighbor's yard play this on a recorder.

This word is NOT anything even remotely new from a linguistic sense.

It's merely the latest attempt by people of extreme laziness to try and spell something so they can use it on the series of pipes we like to call the intarwebs.

The "m" is not specifically pronounced, it just happens that the person is too lazy to open their mouth before they use a guttural grunt. The word is actually very hard to spell, perhaps "ehh" or "uh" or even the basic "hm."

With the lips closed when the vocalization starts, one hears the "m" sound, but that is not actually part of the word, just the speaker's laziness to open their mouth to speak, propensity for mumbling, and sometimes indication of a bit of dehydration, with the lips sticking together, probably due to the overindulgence of caffienated beverages and prolonged closure of the mouth when sitting in front of the computer typing to the world.

It's just an audible acknowledgement of someone else's comment or question, with the tone of voice used to communicate meaning much more than the vocabulary used. One of the shortfallings of the intarweb, that. No way to convey tone of voice.

Really, it comes down to a failing educational system (people don't know how to communciate properly), caused in part by today's societal self-centeredness (I'm too busy to spend time with my kids and teach them things) and avoidance of responsibility (School sucks, let's find a way to ditch it. My parents made me this way, It's not my fault).

meh. whatever.

It's been a dead horse since around '92-'93, when I saw it used fairly frequently on BBS's....
