Hot 4 bangers?
May 15, 2006 06:06PM
What's everyones favourite japanese 4 banger? I was just remembering that low mileage engines complete with transmission from Japan are in the 1-2k range. One of those babies might be the perfect thing to throw in the PV and since I don't know much at all about them I thought I'd ask for opinions. I'd prefer non-turbo at this point I think.

I haven't completely decided against going with a Volvo mill.. but thought I shuold atleast check what else is out there. I just got a MIG welder and hope to have most of the rust repaired in the next few months.. at which point I would like to be fitting a motor.

Any info you want to send my way would be appreciated.

Whatever the thing in Sentra SER's or whatever looked like a pretty hot engine. SR20DET or somesuch?

Of course, for 1-2k you might be able to do a nice duratec and not have to ship anything.

There's always the 4ag from the rwd toyota corollas and early MR2's, the KA24DE from US 240sx's sold in SOHC and DOHC, pricey S2000 motors, the Miata motor (real barn burner, lol)

All obviously came in RWD cars, so they might be easier to fit or whatever they a transverse setup.

SR20DE cam in sentras I believe, but the SR20DET was sold in japaense 240sx's, 4 cylinder T for Turbo and big aftermarket, make a lot of power.

What's wrong with volvo motors? John V has all the guts for a pretty sporty one for a real fair price too.

I'm not opposed to a rotary.. at this point I'm looking at cost efficient power and that's all.

All those crazy japanese codes ring bells.. I'll look into them in due time.. as for Volvo motors.. I have nothing against them at all..

I just want to make sure I don't spend 4k getting 225ish horse when 2k would have done it.

Fuck it. Spend 4 K to get 225 hp then install this thing for another 2 K to get it to 450.

Turbonique Turbine Supercharger.

I would most suggest looking into the KA24's, because you can find them pretty cheaply. People perfectly good ones out all the time to swap in SR20's, and then sell them off. I know they can make some power, but you'll need guts. Factory redline is 7,000, but they are long stroke and fly apart.

That's rediculous, I love it.

I found this link, http://iowahawk.typepad.com/iowahawk/2006/04/the_real_acme.html which was neet. Theres a few others around.

I don't think I'll be doing that, but definitely not because I don't want to.

Jeeeezus Haitch Keerrice'd, you fuck up a nice PV with some long stroke japcrap pos crap and I'll put a hex on you!!

Just get a nice OHC Volvo, crossmember and an Xratty ZF rack and some of the nice light, long rods and some exhaust valves, and a lumpity-lumpity cam and call it good.

You wanna fuck with japcrap go find a Toyo-pet.
Can't? Because they're junk-shit.

And KA24E and DE have nice headfs but they're appalling pick up motors.

IS THERE NO SHAME????

Nope none at all. Just looking for a cheap thrill. Chances are I'll go with a b23 or some bloody Volvo mill in the end.. but at best I'll just be test fitting a clapped out no power regular old boring one in 4+ months if things go well.

Haha yea john they are quite literally truck motors huh?

I think you have not accepted the redblock into your life. The lawn-tractor like tones they emit will grow on you.

Remember the first time you smelled burning rubber? You were like "what the hell is that smell?". First time you run a redblock up the street with no exhaust is a similar feeling I think, except in an audible sort of way. The smell will just be routine burning oil.
