Engineering, the Volvo 242 Group-A Way!

Quoted from

"Axle Housing - Aluminium Alloy, Dana 1031 with bolt on tubes, steel (two types) with 1.5 degree negative camber + sensors for antispin system. Later 1985 homologation included a lightweight Al.Alloy / carbon-fibre unit."

How the hell do you camber a SOLID AXLE?????

Pics, for you whores...

You bend the tubes, either with a press or by heating the top, which causes it to over-shrink when it cools off.

Very common thing to do, very old. Go to a circle track or circuit race where solid axles are used and you'll see a lot of it. Axle splines can tolerate something like a degree of mis-angle, although for some applications you can get funky looking axles with barrel-shaped splines. Can't find any pix, sorry.

I keep hearing that lots of camber/toe is bad for clutch pack diffs, haven't had any problems yet.

Whoa, that's incredible!

I'd have figured the splines on the shafts wouldn't tolerate a load like that.

They don't. They wear out. Circle track guys use some special double splined spherical ends to make it last longer.

....laying down a rubber road to freedom.

Indeed those Grup A volvos had some interesting stuff. I've seen pictures of some of them that had both mechanical AND electronic fuel injection. I think the electronic ones would come on once a good head of booOOOst was boiling.

Here is some good pics of the neolithic beast. http://www.tuff240.com/gpanumber5.htm

I've heard that about the fuel injection....Kjets & LH!

Though I read on one of those specs sites, the fuel injection was all Kjet....The LH system....or use of the AMM was for injecting water meth......really cool idearrr.

Either way.....a cool vehicle.
