WA 112 Juan de Fuca Hwy/Shi-Shi Beach
July 10, 2012 01:32AM
Given everyone here seems to like twists and turns and mud here's a little something if you're looking for fun!

Twists and turns: WA 112 West of Port Angeles must have the most switchbacks in all of WA. The road is a great drive with very little traffic. I was in a car but would be good for motorcycles too.

The mud!: Shi-Shi Beach OMG! Had I known about the 2ft mud holes throughout the last mile of the trail and the 150ft, 65degree cliff you need to descend to the beach I probably wouldn't have done it. But the view at the end was spectacular and the feeling of conquering a few fears was incredible. I busted my ass on the way down, slid for about 10ft. (thank goodness for the padding--backback that is smiling smiley and the trail rope I grabbed. (No pics of the cliff I was actually a little shaken by the fall). I did climb like a spider monkey on the way back and would suggest it for anyone looking to challenge themselves a bit!

Here are a couple pics...

Have a great summer everyone!

Mad River Road, Entiat, WA Then NFSR 5700 for pure motorcycle bliss on pavement.

The view is nice at the end but not as nice as yours. I will need to go compare.

In the long run reality always wins.

Did you pay to park/hike?

The hike is on the Makah Indian Reservation so you'll need to get a permit for your car or bike $10 at the Minimart in Neah Bay from there it's about 20 minutes to the trail parking lot.

Here are a couple more pictures of the tidal pools and a view pretty close to where you descend to the beach (gives you an idea of the cliff).

The beach is pretty rugged but you can camp and another 2-mile hike around the beach to the arches on the left of the first photo.

I've been a city dweller for a long time and have the bug...planning my weekend now not sure where I'm going but you know you're in trouble when King 5 says 520 closed, Mercer exit closed, Mariners on!

NSFR 5700 may have 12 beat the map looks fun smiling smiley

I hope you do, it's a really incredible place.

Made a trip to Hurricane Ridge this past weekend only got one good day and went for the shorter hike with the awesome 360 view of all the mountain tops of the Olympic range. The hike was nothing ~6,200ft in elevation w/ ~1,000ft gain (pic below is a view from near the top, trail to the right in the photo) but the views were incredible and the wildlife amazing. Black bear, mountain goat, marmot, saw around 30 Blacktail deer including this little guy I shot from a distance! There were quite a few people on the trail but most respectful. I'm hooked on something in those mountains... Needless to say....I'll be going back for more smiling smiley

**Didn't camp Gene but I did have the best pancakes in my entire life ever at the CornerHouse Restaurant in Port Angeles!
