I can't find it now, but I think they said someting about the guy in third, by 30 seconds?, hitting an insane wahl dust and catching the car ahead, even with 3 minute windows, and not being able to get by.

How does one end up in a scenario where they're behind someone who they are THREE MINUTES faster than? Usually by a mistake of their own doing.

From what I heard, the 'slower' car was faster before the reseed, but struggled through that stage with broken suspension and legitimately didn't see the car behind them. I know there is some sort of 'tough shit' rule in rally, but I also understand that RallySafe would have allowed the faster car to let the slower car know they had caught them.

There have been plenty of times where the person knew but chose not to move.
One of my favorite videos is Wimpeys catching and eventuallyt bumping an Evo. Google it...

The O'Leary are always great fun to rally with and in the past had generally been producing stage times just a bit slower or just a bit faster than us in the Golf at most events. But, they got rid of their right-hand-drive EVO-5 and then drove this EVO-X at a few events at about their normal pace maybe just a bit slower than before....

I talked with John at the end of this stage to see if they had a flat tire or other mechanical and he was really surprised that we caught him and that he felt he was driving his normal pace. He had no idea we were behind him even when we bumped him, he thought the car had popped out of gear. Cost us about a minute on that stage, maybe more.

BTW< there are two different cameras' videos of that on youtube. One has intercom audio....

Interesting thread, and on a first watch of the video, all I thought was how good the red Escort looked and how terrible those Group N R4 spec Evos sound.

I understood the Subaru off beat noise was down to the unequal length exhaust manifold design.

As soon as the WRC regs changed for 1997, and bespoke non production designs came in, the Boxer engine sound became more of a homogenous buzz, along with all the other cars.

I'm not sure how the USA Subarus are specced though as I don't know the regs StatesidI've watched a lot of Subarus and for my money, there are proper cars and half baked club cars. The latr are competent and I've no doubt the drivers are quite happy with their cost effective chariots. But foru outright spectacle, and the sound of a proper engine that communicates with its audience like a BDA does, don't dismiss a pre-97 Group A works Prodrive Subaru!
