So, looking for more input about this. Here's a little background. There's a new 880 acre offroad motorsports park. We've already setup and designed a 2.5 mile track out there. I'll post some video of it. We're going to have him drag over it with the loader to varying widths between 10-40 feet. Here's a new series we've been talking about. Just trying to get feedback from people of intelligence. This is the third or fourth revision. The biggest thing I worry about is the ECU creating big gaps between cars. We're talking about building cage kits and installing them for like $1200-1500. We have four cars we are looking at buying to build for an initial event and to generate some interest. Shooting for around $5-6K build costs. So, any opinions and/or suggestions are welcome!
No Coast Motorsports Volvo 240 Spec Class Rules Purpose: The purpose of this spec class is to have European style rallycross events using cars that are readily available, stout and strong, lower build costs, and all vehicles to the same or similar specifications. Vehicle Rules: Car must be a Volvo 240 sedan (2 or 4 door) with a 2.1T or 2.3T motor and a 4 or 5 speed stock M45, M46, or M47 series transmission Turbo and intercooler upgrades are not allowed. Engine management, ie. fuel and ignition control, are all free. All intake piping may be modified, including airbox. Exhaust may be modified from the turbo back. Must exit behind car Differential must be welded Final Drive Ratio may be upgraded no more than 4.56 Brake upgrades are allowed, but must still fit under a 14†wheel. Lines may be upgraded and pad material is free. Master cylinder size and location are not flexible. Fuel cells are recommended but not required. Fuel cells must be to FIA FT-3 specifications and must be mounted in the boot. Filler necks are not allowed. Fuel pumps are free. Skidplates are required, in either 1/4†steel or 3/8†aluminum covering the entire fuel tank if using stock location and the oil pan and transmission pan. Material such as HDPE to protect filler neck is recommended if using stock tank. Suspension may be upgraded. (note: hubs may be modified to accomodate JVAB and other suspension systems) Spec tires will be utilized, TBD. (Probably Hanook 175/65/14) Wheels must remain stock 14†size. Side and rear windows must be replaced by Lexan. Doors can be gutted, but the door beam must remain. All upgrades must be documented (ie. calipers from Gen 2 RX7, JVAB 41mm coilovers, 4.56 Dana 30 CWP, etc.) and left on the windshield during tech and registration. Safety Recommendations All cars must have 5 or 6 point SFI 16.1 or FIA 8853/98 certified harnesses. FIA harnesses will expire 5 years after year of manufacture. SFI harnesses will expire in 3 years. All belts must be at least 3â€, except for the anti-submarine belt which must be at least 2â€. All cars are recommended to have a plumbed in fire system. Driver controlled, remote actuated with a minimum content of five pounds, located inside the vehicle, and withing the wheelbase (cannot be dry powder type). Nozzles must be directed into the driver’s compartment and into the engine compartment. An additional handheld fire extinguisher (Type ABC all metal), easily accessed by the driver is also required. All seats must be fixed mount and FIA approved. All driver’s must wear FIA 8856-2000 or SFI 3-2A/5 approved 2 layer or 3 layer Nomex suits. Nomex gloves and nomex shoes are required Helmets are required. SFI 31.2 Rev A, SA2000, or British Standard 6658-85 A/FR Head and Neck restraint systems are not required, but are recommended. Roll cage: Any roll cage will be teched to that vehicles logbooked sanctioning organization’s rules. Any non-logbooked vehicle must have a spec cage (supplied from No Coast Motorsports), or have an inspection to show that it meets the requirements of RA, NASA, or CARS. (CHCA build rules follow RA). Event Operations: Maximum of 12 entries for single day event. Maximum of 24 for two day events All race vehicles must remain on tarps while parked in service Practice to be held in rounds. No more than 6 cars on course at any time during practice. Must be started at intervals to prevent passing if possible. Passing is allowed only on straights during practice. No more than four laps per car per round. A round is complete when all vehicles that wish to take four laps have exited the course. A new round will then be held. No more than three rounds for any practice session. Qualifying run order will be randomly assigned during practice and posted at least 30 minutes before start of qualifying. Qualifying will be fastest of three laps, with no more than three cars on the course at any time, started to discourage passing or catching. Tire swaps from qualifying runs to race runs are not allowed, except in the case of a flat Race run will be a minimum of six laps. Heats to be held in start sizes of six or fewer at organizers discretion. (must be greater than one however). Heats to be ran from slowest to fastest so that the final heat will determine the event winner. Grant Hughes |

Too thick? The only skidplates I've made have been steel or HDPE.
Keeping my eye out for another XR. Planning to keep the suspenders and Compomotives. May buy Aaron's from him. He's moving to Bolivia next month for a while. Then possibly to Japan or back to Denver. And there's a few more I'm looking into or having others look into. Was going to buy one Monday but it sold. The Volvo thing we're going to wait to make sure the new venue is long term before we build any cars and such for it. |

If the goal is inexpensive fun with a 240 I suggest allowing replacment of the really shitty M-whatever transmission with a T-5..... Without an expensive gearset the Volvo gearboxes will shred with stock power. It gets a LOT worse with more power.
Fuel management is free? Cool. Mega-Squirt is said to be cheap and pretty good. Later model cars came with pulsed injection so the fuel rails, pressure regulator, intake manifold and such can be robbed from one of those for cheap. Stock intercooler? Want it to be even for all and reliable? If so then allow a replacement intercooler that is sayyyy the NPR or UD medium duty truck thing. They are close to a drop-in and much more stout, as well as getting more flow and better intake temps. Welded diffs? Bravo. 14" wheels? Guys the turbos all came with 15" things that are easier to fit with rallytires that I have a whole bunch of. Sounds like fun. The idea for 14s was that that was what I thought were more available, and that 14" rally tires are usually cheaper? We drove 50 miles at the new course yesterday. I posted a video up at the location below. We're getting it cut at varying widths from around 10 feet to 40 feet depending on space. This only shows the lower half of the course. One lap is 1.97 miles. $200 annual fee or $20 per day. Pretty sweet. Here's some modified rules. Of course, this is after we finish the initial milk crate series and actually have a few competitors. There are around 10-12 people currently interested. Most from rally background, but a few from dirt oval track backgrounds. I almost called the Open class the John Lane class.

I suggest allowing any manner of gearbox that one can fit in there provided that it is not a hyper-expensive thing. I would likely run an Automajik gearbox as they are inexpensive and live longer then the Volvo Manual boxes.
I also suggest allowing different turbos and exhaust manifold updating/backdating. This will allow use of the better '93 and later exhaust manifold and the Escort Cossie turbocharger.
