Yah it's a lot of fun! That pic happened around the :45-47 mark or so:
There's maybe a half inch of travel left in the RF and the rear suspension has a ton more to go, you can jack a front tire six inches off the ground and both rears stay on the ground. I'm freakin' loving the Black Rocket tires, too. Need more power to deal with all the grip they give. I found the Group A 12A homologation paperwork which has port dimensions/diagrams, and so I copied the ports for my 13B but with bigger exhausts. That and the usual internal tweaks you do to keep it alive at high RPM, but really the engine is pretty tuckered out (it has 37,000mi on it) and I know the rear rotor housing is missing lots and lots of chrome. The suspension bas been detailed here before, but it's a 3 link and FC front suspension, with the shock mounts raised until the springs run out of travel/driveshaft bottoms out at full droop. Front struts are rear WRX and a lot of weldifying. 175lb springs everywhere, 14" front and 13" rear. Really nothing complicated, very very basic and minimalist as far as prep goes. This winter I hope to score enough cheap used stuff on eBay and craigslist to put an aluminum cased full floater 9" rear in it, but I'll keep the current geometry because it just works. I moved the shock mounts up an inch on the rearend because the shocks were topping out before the springs and driveshaft. That's it.
The springs are for, i think, a mid 90s Escort wagon. $80 MOOG bits from NAPA. Pete Remner Cleveland, Ohio 1984 RX-7 (rallycross thing) 1978 Silence is golden, but duct tape is silver. |

I was going to do this but with the STI struts that I had, there was a crap ton of travel in those things. Any pics of the three link inside and out? it on my list of things to try someday. "Rally racing makes a heroin addiction look like a vague craving for something salty" |

wot dafuq? All the Subie fronts I have seen are 160mm travel---not a crap ton of travel in my book....190 is good, 210 is better. Oh so 210 then.. (I see cross-eyed at close range) You give any thought to their valving is for a realtively light end of the car so a light spring? I like the valving on the front STI ones i have on there right now, it's pretty fun off road. I'm sure the rears are different but who knows. No real money will ever be thrown at my car. "Rally racing makes a heroin addiction look like a vague craving for something salty" |

Well, they are adjustables, and I knew they wouldn't be "ideal" but, well, the parts were there and the welder was there and even if you fall on your face you have still moved forward... (It was $60 for a pair of Koni Yellows for a '02-03 WRX. Bought them for a quick flip, turns out nobody wants Konis because you have to *GASP* cut the tops of the strut housings off!)
They work fine except they have a tiny bit too much initial damping, they're a bit stiff over light bumps. Certainly a hell of a lot better than the worn out KYBs I had before. Stock WRX/STI rear spring rates are higher than the 175lb-in i am running (225, I think?) so I didn't think that'd be an issue.
