Thanks. Yep the smog plans changed, that was actually one of the more difficult hurdles of the build (smog ref laughed at me when he saw the car with the diesel, family in TN wanted to register it for me but than changed their mind) but it ended up being pretty easy.

Black and white was too boring. I had the red and gold left over from previous race cars. It’s covered in skateboard crap because 1. I manage a skateboard shop 2. The owner sponsors me via providing a place to build the car which I’m grateful for 3. I’m also grateful for skateboarding in general because it was the only thing I had growing up that I learned to be fast and fearless with. If it passes ARA’s standards and I like it, I could care less about what people think how it looks. Build a car that makes YOU smile |

Totally agree! Build the car the way you want it. Good luck and I’ll be watching to see how you and the car do(in hopefully quite a few events). ... ................................................. ..................... Thanks! Been driving the car more, still not a serious amount of miles. I trust the engine fully but I am putting the new diff and trans in now so when that’s done it’ll be 500 light driving miles and than I’ll give it a good shakedown at Hollister |

Hollister is an orv park- right? And since we were talking about smog, apparently I haven’t smogged a car in California in quite some time. Had to go get one the other day and thought the guy was up to shenanigans since he didn’t put my car on the dyno or put a sniffer in the exhaust. Of course I happily said nothing, paid the man and took my “passed smog” paperwork to AAA to get my tags. Looked up online when I got home and see that for a few years now -post 2000 Car’s only get a visual test and computer plug-in now. That’s interesting. I’m wondering how a re-flashed e c u , (obviously re-flashed to stock for the smog test )will pan out. Or engine internals -compression changes ,cam changes etc. I guess if your computer doesn’t throw a code -should be good to go right? .. ................................................. ..................... Yup - Hollister is an OHV park.
As far as smog goes, if they dont catch the ECU reflash or other things it's fine. I was thrown off recently when I smogged my C30 and there was no tailpipe test. I'm pretty surprised by that because there are ways you can trick the ECU if you dont even have a cat.

So Patrick, are you happy with how the Volvo is performing?

Mostly yes! Very happy. For reliability concerns I ran only 5 psi. It's enough to have fun. Stuff won't break. But I'm bumping it up mostly for the sake of being able to charge up inclines, that was the only part where it needed a little more go. The brakes need more work. I ran the rally with power assist. The pedal was half mushy and pretty unpredictable. I corrected the notes in recce to compensate for this and knocked a lot of turns down where there was a good amount of slowing to do. Eventually I obviously figured out brakes are not super important, but when preparing for anything that was a 2 or even a 3 I felt like I was never able to get it slowed down as smoothly or accurately as I would have liked which was a bummer because I felt like if I had a more predictable pedal I could have got the car set way better for the turn. I've been driving it on the street without the vacuum hose to the booster hooked up. Obviously, the pedal is no longer mush but I'm still not huge on how it feels [has nothing to do with leg effort, just seems really hard to get them to lock up] and I am really thinking of deleting the booster and the factory master, and putting a balance bar with dual brake masters in it's place. Handling wise I don't want to change a thing. It felt totally fine, maybe a bit stiff, but I have other changes I want to work on before I fiddle with anything in this department. I felt like getting pretty damn close to my podium my first rally and finishing all but 1 stage is a good start. Without the first rally jitters out of the way, more trust in the car, a little more power and the brakes sorted Tour De Forest will go very well. Edited 2 time(s). Yep! Not too many rallyists out here. I mostly went to the DWA meet to test how the brakes felt without vacuum to the servo. Car ended up getting a lot of attention there, kinda caught off guard. |

I’ll be up that way with the car for a rallycross later in the year. My boss will be driving it, in exchange he’s letting me race his hobby stock for a night (haven’t wheeled one in 6 years) |
