I'm unclear about how this nut AynRand has to do with what looks to be a promising limited slip device for our Volvo rear....
Sooooo what would need to be done with axles to make it work? Is this an opportunity to have stronger axles made? I have broken more Volvo axles in the splines at the carrier then I care to count. I would welcome the opportunity to reduce unsprung weight by swapping a Volvo axle back into the car that would take the power my turbo six makes. Even with the Aluminum center section the 9" thing with the 35 spline axles is very heavy. JohnLane Overkill is consistently more fun |

Yup, Moser will make a set of new alloy axles for $315 per pair. Or you can have Mark Williams make you a set of gun-drilled 4340 ones Mr. Overkill. > > I would welcome the opportunity to reduce unsprung > weight by swapping a Volvo axle back into the car > that would take the power my turbo six makes. > > Even with the Aluminum center section the 9" thing > with the 35 spline axles is very heavy. > > JohnLane > > Overkill is consistently more fun You can check the axle shaft sizing on their slick little calculator: http://www.moserengineering.com/Pages/axletech.html And because you might need it: REPLACEMENT POLICY Moser Engineering, Inc. will, at its’ sole discretion replace or repair, free of cost, any part found not to be of ordered dimensional specifications, prior to assembly or use of the part. In addition, Moser Engineering, Inc. will replace their 33, 35, & 40 spline axles for a period of ten (10) years after the original date of purchase if broken at the splined end due to excessive horsepower. However, 33 spline axles that were broken due to excessive horsepower will be replaced at the sole option of Moser Engineering, Inc., with 35 spline axles. In the event that 35 spline axles are broken due to excessive horsepower within ten (10) years of purchase, they will be replaced at the sole option of Moser Engineering, Inc., with 40 spline axles. If 40 spline axles are broken due to excessive horsepower, they will be replaced at the sole option of Moser Engineering, Inc with another set of 40 spline axles, free of charge. Edited 1 time(s). Plus they're not violent on axles like a spool, welded carrier, or detroit locker. I saw some video of the pavement stages doo wops and your car would defiantly turn in a smoother with a hydra-lok ![]() > > > Hmmmmmm...... > > The 9" thing is all new in the center section, > which is a disincentive to make a change. > > > > JohnLane > > Overkill is consistently more fun I'll bet there is more weight that could be taken of your 9". Is the ring gear turned down, gun drilled axles, thin wall chromoly tubes with good bracing, trac9 lightweight housing? I'll bet the weights could be made comparable. Tim |

Tim I may well do such things in the future.
Certainly gun-drilling the axles would be a nice thing. I'm curious as to how the Hydra-Lock diff would handle. Something I do like about a spool or welded diff is that it is very consistent. JohnLane Overkill is consistently more fun |

our friend up here RAINBOW LARRY google: rainbow auto service
has all the stock axles i'll ever need for the back of my corolla. and all the 240 shells john could want, and even two merkurs. (4 if you count the sierras) having a limited slip in the corolla was nice, very. john L. is right about the spool thing. but i'm interested in the hydra-lock. i've got five on it. 700 max to bolt into a dana30 rear with the 5.3gear on it. and you say $350 for my pair of spare axles? he sold me an entire rear end for $150. We're just going to have them re-spline some stock ones. Last time I checked they will re-spline an axle for $40 each. So $20(junkyard 744 axle)+$80(re-spline)+$200(hydra-lok)=$300 which is still way less than just buying a new Dana 30 power-lock which will split a cross shaft. Tim |
