I got a little free time and made some progress on the GTX brake upgrade over the last few days. The photos are for you John because there's really no a good reason to make the brake parts like this. That's right I admit it...they're like this because I can
![]() First up is one stock diameter spindle on the left and two that have been turned down in outside diameter to fit inside my rotor hats. ![]() I need longer wheel studs but I couldn't find anything that fit exactly. So I bought some LONG ARP studs (PN/100-7713), shortened them, turned in a bullet nose, and had them re-plated. ![]() The knurl is slightly bigger so the holes need to be reamed out to 0.500" diameter. ![]() And all pressed in. ![]() All the sexy brake parts. ![]() That's right John...billet 6al-4v titanium t-nuts. Offering up decreased rotational inertia, corrosion resistance, radial expansion for theoretically less warpy rotors, and they're really shiny. ![]() ![]() ![]() With the new wheels. ![]() ![]() Edited 1 time(s). Hey Tim
Don't forget to give the Ti bits a good dip in hi-temp anti-sieze, I learned from mountain bike bits that Ti is a bugger in those dissimilar metal environments. Looks far too pretty to bo basjing about in the woods with ![]() Cheers, Ted Pure mathematics is the enemy of every truly creative man -- Sir Alec |

Your like a magician of sorts.
I have some questions to ask you. I am getting ready to do some work on the mills at the technology/machine shop down at Metro State College of Denver next week with some students. I have M14 studs to press into the hubs, but need bored (or is reamed the correct term) because stock stuff is M12. The knurl diameter is 14.75 mm or 0.580". I also have the 7/16-20 steel inserts that I am going to press into the upright to bolt the caliper to. Their Wilwood parts and I believe they say to bore to 9/16" to press them in, but I measured them anyhow. It's knurl diameter is 0.57". What is the bit that you are using. What diameters should be used for these knurl diameters? I was going to post pictures, but the camera is MIA. Also going to mill out all the broken bolts in my two T3 turbine housings. The car should be driving by Easter though if all the orders show up and the machine work goes as planned. Grant Hughes |

On the wheel studs you will want about 0.010" of interference which is a 0.570" reamer. Probably easiest for you to buy it from McMaster Carr. They only seem to have 0.5680" which is close enough. The Wilwood insert should be fine at 9/16" which would make it a 0.0075" press fit. You might be able to get away with just drilling it if you're careful but I would suggest the following since you're trying to move the holes over. -get a 1/2" endmill and SLOWLY peck drill it into the existing hole offset. This will keep it from walking to the side and ovalizing the hole. -enlarge that very carefully with a twist drill (not the easiest technique as it will try to grab), a hole enlarging drill that doesn't grab like the photo below, or a series of reamers. ![]() > > Also going to mill out all the broken bolts in my > two T3 turbine housings. Let me know if you have any other questions. Tim |

On the mountain bike front I made those t-nuts out of scrap Ti that was left over from making these billet dropouts: ![]() Here is a steel set on one of my single speed frames: ![]() And finally the really stupid. A custom 33t single speed chainring out of a 0.25" plate of titanium. I worked at Cook Bros. Racing during college so I already had the mounting profile of the F-cranks. I couldn't resist engraving the brand name of "Spacely Space Sprockets". I'm sure at least Anders will get the reference. ![]() ![]() |
