Tim,
Correct me if I'm wrong, It looks like you turned the studs down to ~2.75". For future reference, you could have used miata studs which are 2.75" length and not had to ream the holes, turn the studs, or get them re-plated. Also I'm wondering if you've heard much about switching to the FWD 323 knuckles and S13 adjustable outer tie rod ends to help eliminate bumpsteer. FWD 323 knuckles also have a shorter steering arm so that yields a faster reacting steering. Another plus is the "Antlers" don't stick so far out. I haven't seen the knuckles yet so, for me it's all heresay at this point. Another thing I was wondering is if after putting all this time into it and changing wheels anyway did you ever think of switching to BG chassis 5 lug setup like the GTR has. Supposedly its way stronger, the Grp A cars ran them iirc. Personally, I think it'd be waay too hard to find parts for if it did break and probably not worth the money. But I was just wondering if any of these options ever crossed your mind. Are you building the car for rally america? what class? Michael LeCompte Michael LeCompte |

At the time I bought them I wasn't sure what length I would need (no lug nuts in hand/rims on a boat from England) so I just got long ones. I have a little over an hour in machining and no plating cost because I threw them in with a customer parts. > > Also I'm wondering if you've heard much about > switching to the FWD 323 knuckles and S13 > adjustable outer tie rod ends to help eliminate > bumpsteer. I'm just going to put a 1.5 to 1 steering quickiner in the column of my new shell. > > Another thing I was wondering is if after putting > all this time into it and changing wheels anyway > did you ever think of switching to BG chassis 5 > lug setup like the GTR has. Some of the yahoo list guys tried to buy parts from him but I never heard of anyone being successful. Now the exchange rate really kills it. > > Are you building the car for rally america? what > class? > > Michael LeCompte The new shell is getting a NASA logbook so that makes it Open 4wd Tim |

I saw something on a different forum where the factory had an upgrade kit with RX-7 (5 lug) brakes and possibly hubs. (Rear hubs all around?)
Some people get all horny over having 5 lugs versus four. I don't see the difference, four lugs hold the wheels on just fine. Pete Remner Cleveland, Ohio 1984 RX-7 (rallycross thing) 1978 Silence is golden, but duct tape is silver. Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 03/16/2008 07:43AM by Pete. |

My setup has almost stock wheel offset so no extra leverage on the bearings with big wheel spacers. Other than that it's just good Timken bearings and keeping a full extra set of spare knuckles in the truck. Tim |

If you have it setup again, I'd like to, since I am retarted and can't see how this avoids the wider bottom on the stud - last time I had to do something like this I ended up threading a long nut on it and grabbing that in the chuck.

Are you talkin bout Derek from Cork Sport? or someone else from this board? For some reason, Derek Bottle's name came to mind. So googled it. And while it has nothing to do with this discussion, Up popped a great photo album that has rally cars in action from members of this board! I thought I'd pass it along... http://www.flickr.com/photos/jimculp/ Some of my rally hero's are in there...Dave Clark, John Lane, several GTX's. Ferrari's and Tons of other historic race cars. It was so fun to flip through all of them. Michael LeCompte |

Derek at Corksport has some sort of weird 5 lug knuckles on the front of his car and the last time I talked to him he was trying to adapt Nissan 4-piston calipers to them. He's probably got something stranger than that on his car by now as he is known to pluck obscure parts off the Yahoo Japan auctions. It's really not that hard to modify the stock knuckles. John did it with a hacksaw, sander, and a manual mill (in that order). --multiple edits for my inability to type or spell tonight. Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 03/17/2008 12:42AM by Tim Taylor. |

Those GTX wheelbearings were one of the big reasons I went to a first gen protege to rally in. The bearings on those cars, or the next-gen 323 GTR's if you can find them, are much, much more serious. Big ol' donut the size of a fist.
