BRAKES:
Is there any reason to go with an aftermarket caliper or aluminum hats for these cars other than weight savings? I ran an 11" (280mm) Girling G60 with an adapter setup on a rabbit at one point on the street and I was more than happy with the results....never faded despite some good abuse, hell I never even think I changed the pads after 60K plus miles Any reason why we can't run a 10.1" (256mm) setup with good pads on a more piggy car? I ran the 10.1" setup on the blue bunny with a set of porterfields with much success. Obviously the cost effective route would be the 11" setup, but I'd like to keep running 14" wheel since we have a ton of tires and about 25 semi-strong wheels... I had a MK III 8v 2.0 with the 10.1 brakes. Only time I ever had issues was running the 13 mile tarmac stage at Rally Tennessee. Didn't have brake fade, but did have smoking/burning brakes at the end of the run.

A long time ago when I was running the wee 9.4 inch mk2 brakes on the rally GTI, I longed for aftermarket multi-piston calipers. I was interrested in the increased stiffness, more even clamping force, and better modulation I imagined they would provide. The 9.4 inch calipers were pretty flimsy and flexy and I was actually getting funny pad wear and a softish brake pedal because of it. Since then I upgraded to the 10.1 setup which is a much beefier setup all around and haven't had any problems with them. The only thing better than 10.1s with Poterfield pads would be 11s with Poterfield pads, but like you, I want to be able to run 14" tires so......

I do hate the single piston sliders.....my crew would love me for the pad swap/cotter pin action....calipers are fairly cheap (wilwood dynalite), around $125 a piece or so depending on where. Found a set of adapters for $190 retail, wonder how hard it would be to make a set of adapters for 10.1" AND 11" factory rotors??

How long were the brake pads lasting you? I could go through a set in a weekend road racing, but for rally they seem to last 1-2 seasons. Is this pretty normal? I've definitely give up some pad life in exchange for a wider temperature range. |

the porterfields we have on the car were doing OK, we would've needed a new set pretty soon, so we got a couple seasons out of them

Tom I got 4 "Teardrop" wheels with mounted michy's that I'd love to kick your way, or we can unmount the tires and I can vortex off the wheels hehe. I am all setup with 15" 5x100 stuff so no reason to hang onto the 14".

I got a bit of fade with the Corrado 11" stuff and Porterfield R4's but it was not too bad - however I am not a big left foot braker and thus am fairly light on the brakes.
The willwood kits sold are not as large as a pad as the stock Corrado stuff so they are likely to have more pad wear. I would expect you would be fine more than 90% of the time on the 10.1" crap. In the long run reality always wins. |
