So, the car dyno'd 170whp and 230ftpnds today, 18psi, no timing, and about, oh, I don't know, a 9:1 air fuel ratio lol.

I bet I could gain 20whp alone by getting the fuel situation to 11:1!

I'd guess the car was last tuned for the 40mm restrictor several years ago.

In case putting two and two together is tough, rockasilly aka Jeff is my co-driver smileys with beer We spent the day yesterday washing the car and checking it over. Oh, and driving it around and pissing people off... mmmm, tractor sound is intoxicating smoking smiley

Did I mention the car passed its CARS logbook grandfathering with no problem? So I have a nice new logbook in my grubby hands now. The sky is the limit! I also picked up a Sparco Evo for $500 last night in really good shape (instructor passenger seat out of a Porsche 944, the dude ended up living one block from me and raced at Chump Car with me, weird)!

The nice thing about this car is all we need are belts and we could do Kananaskis. We won't because the car needs to be shaken down much better than that, but we could. I'm going to try to get a wideband installed before the snow flies and get the on boost A/F ratio to 10.5:1. I don't mind not running at the bleeding edge of the current system, especially if it allows me to safely run 91 octane, I would really like MOAR TORQUES though (2nd gear is addictive). The 2nd to 3rd gap sucks, but with the cams I can take it a bit further up in the revs without dropping a ton of jam to make the transition better. Oil pressure seems a bit low (gauge might not be working) so it'll get an oil change soon to see if that helps at all.

Adam. Not sure of your familiarity with the 4G63 but make sure when you remove the oil filter you give a crank on the water cooling housing thing. We lost an engine at a hill climb in one I was codriving it due to that coming loose during oil filter removal, not being tightened, then slowing loosening and bye bye oil, bye bye motor.

Thanks Grant! I'll give it a check when I change the oil next week.

Three of us, myself, Mark Malsom, and Steve Bis learned a shit ton thanks to that stupid thing. I think it was five or six times in and out with engines over that summer to get a solid setup for Cog. Variety of mistakes from something as stupid as not cleaning out crank oil passages and spinning a bearing within miles to a JDM ebay engine with a dropped valve and huge hole in the piston. Good times. Though I took what I learned there and rebuilt my Colt engine which then lasted a few more years and rallies and hill climbs.

Hey boss, before you drop coin on DSMlink, you might want to give some thought to running an Evo VIII ECU. Faster processor, better map capabilities, datalogging, all the bells and whistles, for probably less than US$250 turn-key.

Takes a bit more installation effort over Link, but the value seems first rate. Definitely a more modern solution with OEM reliability. Details on GalantVR4.org.

I share this as I've been thinking about throwing Jackal (DSMap, speed density) on the stock EPROM ECU with an Ostrich Emulator in the Gaylant, but reading up on how simple (and powerful, and inexpensive) the E8ECU swap looks, I think this is the route I'll take, hopefully by Christmas.

And, while I'm sharing random bits of Evo VIII interchangeability, the OE cams work out to something like 262/262s and are a direct fit in the DSM/GVR4, though you have to machine a slot in the other cam for the CAS. Basically, it's a $50 set of OEM 262 cams.

Just thought I'd share. I love seeing Mitsubishis back where they belong - sideways on gravel.

Press on.

While I appreciate the suggestion and will look into it, we never got Evo 8's up here. By the time I sourced everything, I am willing to bet the costs would be a draw. On top of that, I haven't heard really anything negative about ECMLink yet (ok datalogging, decent resolution on the maps, antilag, yadda yadda). Simplicity is key here. I don't want to mess with wiring. This talon will never be a balls out open class car as reliability will 95% of the time get you a better finish than all out speed.

Basically, whatever is easiest/simplest. In this case, I find it hard to imagine anything being easier than plugging in a ECU and having someone clean up the fuel and timing maps for a restricted car. winking smiley

@Joachim - lulz, that too. Glad I could help.

@Adam - Nice thing about the Evo VIII ECU, it's the same as the one in the 4-cylinder 3G Eclipse. From what I've read, it's as simple as flashing the Evo ROM.

Not as simple as DSMlink, as it involves re-working the ECU connection on the main harness (or building a patch cable), but ECMlink runs US$425-$545. If I can save $200-$300 on my tuning solution, I'm willing to put in the elbow grease on the front end.

No worries, mate. We Mitsu guys gotta look out for each other.

There are a lot of hiccups with using at evo 8 ecu on a dsm. Using Link is full proof and easy. Having done both a million times, i would spend the bit of extra cash and go with Link every time.

So, not to name names or anything, but someone might have written the wrong VIN down on the bill of sale, which means I currently have an illegally imported car.

Luckily, I live about 15 minutes from the Edmonton International Airport which SHOULD be able to issue me a new "form 1" (document for importing a car) with the proper information. Unfortunately, this means I had to put insurance on the Tal[hoon] and daily drive it for the next day and a half.

Life's a bitch, eh? smileys with beer The car is crazy in 3rd and 4th, pulls like a freight train when it spikes to 21psi thumbs up

my galant should hopefully be rather smoothing going. All not turboed and the like. But in time, im certain to walk down this path. I need to flat out ditch the 89/90 style electronics in mine.
