![]() I didn't really close this loop with the community here, but... yeah, the NASA Rally Sport rule for lexan/polycarbonate window replacement is no longer "as thick as the OEM glass or thicker". It's now "1/8th of an inch or thicker". That got put into the 2012 rules which came out about eight months ago. The reason that rule got any attention is directly because of the conversation here on RallyAnarchy.com. There was no way it could be determined, in the field, how thick an OEM window was for all the cars we have, and we couldn't fathom how to justify different vehicles having different thicknesses required for the same size and placement, so we totally dumped that and settled instead on a rule that makes it easier and faster for people to build cars and simpler for the techs to check them. So congrats RallyAnarchy, you've had a positive impact on things. ![]() Cheers, Anders Grassroots rally. It's what I think about. |

I still don't understand the need for a rule on this at all. It seems to me that you could run a car with an OEM windshield and window-nets and no glass or plastic in the remaining window openings and still be legal. Not that it would be fun with all the dust....
So, why put a minimum/maximum/any thickness requirement??? ____________________________________________________________- One. Class -- 2WD www.quantumrallysport.com http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/pages/Quantum-Rally-Sport/281129179600?ref=nf |

Sure, I just don't get it. Why have one rule that says you need a minimum thickness when you can show up with nothing at all and be ready to race. What purpose does the rule serve? As written, this rule now suggests that a car with a busted rear window would be unable to continue without installing new glass or 1/8" lexan/polycarbonate of some sort. The rule needs to be more specific iIMO. Something like --Stock glass windows or 1/8" or thicker Material-X (and this should be very specific on the material) is required for the driver and passenger windows. Otherwise, a window net meeting specification X or Y is required --Windows behind the driver and passenger door openings are free (glass, plastic, metal of any thickness) ____________________________________________________________- One. I often wonder why rules feel compelled to specify things, they seem like it would be better as "broad Guidelines' John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! Pacific Standard Time is 3 hours behind Eastern Standard Time. |

I think it depends on the sophistication of the cheating and willingness of the tech teams to enforce the spirit of the rules. NASCAR has a really small rule book but the tech people are more than willing exclude teams for force them to make last minute changes to the car or no race. And while the teams don't complain too loudly or no race. A good example is when the came down hard of Jimmie Johnson because the C-pillars looked wrong. Even though the fit car template that all of the cars were running they looked like they were cheating so the threw the book at him. F1 has a very detailed rule book and only makes rulings at the very edges of the rules. Like after Monaco where the had to clarify the difference between a slot and hole in the floor of the Red Bull cars. In rally terms NASA has one of the more open rule sets especially compared to the CARS and RA. FIA being the other extreme. |

now does that mean the glass would have to meet the RA rules? Not sure if that is deemed "safety"

Sorry, I should've just left it at "...must conform to the RA rules".
10.2.A.5.e (bodywork restrictions for the open classes): The original side and rear window(s) may be replaced with a polycarbonate equivalent of equal or greater thickness than the original glass. The windshield can only be replaced with material identical to that of the original as long as it is some form of laminated safety glass. Production classes have to have the stock stuff, of course.
