I would like the pin stand mounts to be round in the rocker, but the VW jack has a square end. ![]() So do I put a round end on the jack or put a big tube in the side of the car so the fat sqare lifty bit of the jack fits in the hole? ![]() ![]() Seems like there would be a lot of pressure on the jack point at points that meet the square bit. I could put square mounts in but then the jack isnt free to rotate as the car comes up and down. |

So I modeled up a rough draft of the cage. Can anyone provide insight on if the dash bar and 2nd front strut top member is necessary for chassis life during normal stage usage.
Changes not in model -No gussets -Belt bar is too high -Dash bar may not be in the right spot or shaped correctly |

Cut the passenger side rocker out of the car. Reproduction sheet metal for the rockers is surprisingly cheap. Going to add pin stand points while I am at it. Going to be a busy few weeks getting it prepped to go to the cage builder.
Running a radio at the rallysprint this Saturday and a Rallycross the next Saturday takes a decent chunk out of build time. Also I will probably be helping Graham get his 96 ready for the Rallycross. |

Did you forget your dawg at the daycare today? I've seen the dawg sitting in the way back of yoar Frocus a couple times this week, but not this afternoon (I've been driving the Volvo the past few days because I should drive the Subaru to the junkyard). ST with HAM antenna is hard for me to miss.

Usually have my dog and Graham's in the car with me. Friday I only had mine and he must have been laying down when I passed you. |

I am going to put round tube in the car (~20mm ID; standard for european stuff it seems) then convert the jack to have a round end. I misspoke earlier and I actually have a jack with a stamped end so it will be easy to convert. |

I had a guibo come apart after a test day. It sucked on the highway and since there was a friend with a trailer and a rest area, we swapped cars and I drove his rally car back and he towed mine. I think I could have driven it the rest of the way if I'd had to.
I don't know why you'd bother with a nearly free jack from the 60s when for just under $1000 you could have one of these beauties! http://rally.build/evocrk-quick-lift-hydraulic-rally-jack/ Grant Hughes |

Real world experience with round pin jacks and the $olution Grant linked to.
You need to be able to lock up the wheels on the car to be able to jack it up. A handbrake that holds and does't lose pressure, wheel chocks, whatever... We had a flat, drove it out of the stage, and then had to change it on the roadside and ended up getting people to 'hold the car' in place as we jacked it... otherwise the jack would rotate in the pin reciever and drop the car. It was sketchy as hell and we'd have been fucked if we'd have had to stop on stage. (not my car... hadn't seen it before starting the event or I might have said something) To be fair, the hydro handbrake that didn't lock on was the biggest problem in the situation. The jack didn't help. The 2.5RS I rallied had some square tubing welded all long the pinch weld so you could jack the car quickly adn easily from anywhere along the sill. I don't know if that was Dave Clark's idea or the original owner of the car's. I still want to vomit a little. ![]() Thomas, you asked about front strut bars and a dash bar earlier in the thread....I don't have them. Seemed like a lot more work and just never happened. It seems to me (without looking at any statistics) that a majority of cars, especially XRs, get totaled before a worn out chassis becomes an issue. Now for safety and stability, that could be a different story. |
