XR4 stock turbo replacement?
December 10, 2007 01:23PM
I'm starting to reassemble my street XR4. My stock turbo has a very very cracked turbine (hot side) housing. Chunks of metal missing inside and the wastegate area has two cracks, one of looks like it will soon make a "permanently open" situation. All of my spares are cracked inside, too (although some not as bad).

So, Anarchists, do I reassemble with my least cracked turbine housing and a 40bob downpipe/wastegate elbow (in stock) and hope it doesn't self-destruct? Do I find another non-cracked housing (seems they're all this way)? JV, do you remember what a stock turbo exhaust A/R is (0.60 cold side, I've seen listings for both 0.60 and 0.48 hot side)?

Or do I get a badass Cozzie housing?

The turbo guts themselves look good and have only 20k miles on them, so it's not like I need everything. I also have a 0.48 cold oil-cooled T3 that probably came out of a Volvo or Saab. It has a similar (large) crack problem.

Budget? 8 pack of Guinness? Stay at home dad is my price-point.

Thanks--

I think John likes the .48 hot side (faster spooling). I think you should trade me your 40bob elbow for an uncracked turbine housing with stock wastegate elbow. but seriously I think the turbine housing from the Saab (.48 t3) with the 40bob elbow should work fine.

ooo, pictures. Not very good ones, but hey. The worst cracking is of course hardest to see (in the top picture).

Anybody got a 0.48 T3 hot side housing without the cracks?

Don't want to pay $220 for a new one.
