Alright, so it finally fell in my lap. Was about to buy an '82 242 that ran, but needed a lot of trans and suspension work. The guy wanted 1k and had bought it off Rich's Volvo here in town, another red flag. The motor had been swapped, rear glass bodged on as a windshield, a real botch job, but at an ok price and it ran. So on my way home to get a tow setup I ran across a guy who lives in my neighborhood who I hit up about his '84 242 a while back. Didn't want to sell back then.
His mind had changed. (I think his wife changed it for him.) 500 bucks, good shape, not running. 30 minutes later I had her purring, title in hand. Trans good, brakes good, motor seeming real good too. She's got that Volvo sag in the rear, like a swedish hoodlum, so I know new springs are in order. I'll post new pics as I go along and turn her into my rally bitch, but here she is after a nice bath to get rid of the awesome layer of NW moss. Now the hunt for replacement doors begins... |

You're sounding all chipper for a guy who just a few hours ago was crushed by the inexorable logic that you'll never get all that big sponsiorship dollahz because 240. OK whaddya reckon the 1st step is that you wanna attack? John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! Oh man, well I don't head to the rally-x things too much. After the great performance by the Maverick with truck tires, I may have to find some bigger tires for the V8 Volvo and have some fun out there! |

suspension and tires first. she's saggin' a bit in the back, so new rear springs asap. should i go stiffer on the springs? ipd has stiffer rear springs in stock, prolly just put some new shocks in while i'm at it. check the trailing arms and replace anything else that needs it. tougher sway bar. then hit the front suspension up. maybe buy some stuff from this jvab guy i heard about. strut braces. tougher sway bar. tires. fab a skid plate. not even thinking about major engine work till everything else is done. questions? comments? suggestions? ridicule? |

moogs and bilstein hd shocks are on their way. full fluid flush, tuneup, timing belt and all that stuff tomorrow. anyone have any experience using S10 truck springs on the front? |
Quick rock auto search turns up the s10 front springs are 750lbs/in with a 0.750in wire.
Stock Volvo springs are about 100-125lb/in according to John. If you want stiffer, I would either do a coilover sleeve setup with some ~175lb/in-200lb/in springs ($120-200) or add some spring rubber between the coils (~$40). |
