I thought about posting this in "off topic", but figure it could affect people building/modifying rally cars.
I've been busy the last few years dealing with gun and ammunition bans by Connecticut and that piece of shit in the Whitehouse, so I'm not up on car stuff these days. My understanding from TV news is the U.S. congress is considering a ban on people servicing their own cars, and I was wondering what you guys know about this. So far what I have heard is 12 manufacturers want to make it a crime to service one's car (related to software copyright bullshit). All my cars are old, so none are connected to internet etc. Wife's car is newest at 2001 now with 172,000 miles, but she is looking at buying a newer car (1-3 years old). My cars are 1995 and earlier, so these commies can go fuck themselves. I have a Snap-On Solus Pro (which Snap-On is still creating software for and still plan to for a few years when I called them last year), but I am wondering if this proposed legislation will turn the Solus Pro (and other scanners) into paperweights. What do you guys know about all this? If this stuff is passed will you be able to legally modify and build new rally cars not provided by the manufacturers? |

Interesting. Thanks for the link. I can't say I agree with this part: "The Right to Repair Act is bipartisan legislation that would require automakers to provide the same service information and tools to independent auto and maintenance shops, as well as to consumers, that the automaker dealership service centers receive." The automakers should not be forced to provide service information and tools. However, they should not be allowed to stop owners from working on their cars (at least that is how the media is presenting it). Government intervention typically has tons of negative consequences. I will have to look at that link in more detail. |

Jens you are a moron. A senile droolinmg moron. What you see in the bill is exactly WHAT the powerful do when they think tyhey can buy legislators and thart a suffcient % of the population is apathetic or stupid and del;usional---like you. THAT attempt once again is just another step in their trying by every means they can to contropl you by controlling your spending... As much as i think politicians are weak people, and that lobbyists are sub-human vermin who shoul;d be shot along with their masters-----it ain't gonna happen so we must have something to counterbalance un-restrained power of corporations. Googled and found above link.... Otherwise...never heard of the topic.... Wouldn't worry about that at all..... The US government has about as much chance of passing something like that as it has banning the posession of all firearms in America. Never, EVER,EVER gonna happen.......oh they'll try-don't get me wrong. And if it did....just imagine the massive non compliance.....nationwide. Oh noes ..it's the wrench grabber po-lice -they are coming for my code-scanner! Come and take it copper- it's right next to my AR! ................................................. ..................... Support your Local North American Rally Forum!! I would suggest getting back to worrying about gun ownership rights:bans ....
which is something that is obviously actually happening incrementally of course.. Or way more on topic...public land grabs...random road or area closures by federal departments due to some freako greenie group that found an endangered bug or toad or something so we cant have the public drive these dirt roads anymore -no sir!- never mind that the public owns them. Or just departmental decisions on a whim... like this kinda old one: ................................................. ..................... Support your Local North American Rally Forum!! Tools in this case means specialty tools up to and including scantools. "Provide" doesn't mean "free", it means that it can't be locked in to their dealer network. If I didn't have that stuff available to me, I would grind to a halt. As a professional, I literally would not be able to even rotate someone's tires without this level of access.
