So how does Tim's design avoid binding condition that would occur with reinforcing the stock trailing arms?

This is a cheaper to make version that John suggested. A bit closer to a real solution. All the yellow bits are spherical bearings. The two at the back create an axis of rotation thru the centerline of the balls shown by the red arrow. This decouples the bending moment from the toe link that flexes the stock trailing arm. So no binding but they can still transmit inline forces and brake torque.
