To clarify the cheap as possible thing, the items need to be reasonably cost effective with respect to durability. So the in the case of the HDs vs JVABs. Sure the HDs are cheaper, but they will wear out a lot faster than higher quality suspension set ups. So is it a reasonable buy if they dont last long? This is what I have to think about. So actually I wouldn't call it the cheapest possible way, but rather the most cost effective.

He should be. I'm am 100% certain I'd be long gone if I had tried to build the Merkur first instead of buying the crappiest cheap car I could and slowly limping my way to the finish of my first rally. I was so late into final control they were packing up to leave. Like 30 minutes behind. I was hooked. Grant Hughes |

Except he stated in his intro that he wanted to enter a rally on Oct 1. Maybe I erroneously assumed he meant this year. |

I would just run stock springs and HDs. I am not in any way implying that this is a better suspension than something more rally focused. Just that you can have a lot of fun and do a lot of rallies on a more modest suspension than what many people in the sport today think you can. Edited 1 time(s). Yeah brilliant. spend $700 or 900 om something you know going in ill bend and bottom and cause problems and in short order due to frequent replacement of the inadequate things, end of matching the price of good suspension... Wise use of limited funds.. Frick tell us right now ho much travel the BMW off the shelf HDs have. And what I get curious about is why you get some stuff for your on car for several thousand bucks and that's hunky dory but a guy should get something that e know is not strong enough and absurdly short on travel even for 30 years ago. The guy has already decided what he's going to get, so this is purely discussion for general elucidation. I was initially going to run K-sport. They are $1500 for all four corners but after reading and talking to others, they just don't hold up as well during stage rallies as they are more tailored toward rally cross. So essentially it would put me in the same position as the HDs which is why I am opting to spend more initially and have a well reputed suspension from the get go. Plus moar drooooop

Hey John, Actually my suggestion was to buy used Bilstien HDs which as of last year I was able to get a set for my E36 for about $250. As I thought the original goal was to get on stage as cheaply as possible. Garrett has since revised that goal, so then building with JVABs is a much better choice. If you want to use me as an example then OK, I upgraded my first rally car to Bilstien HDs after 3 rallies because I thought the boge pro-gas street shocks that came with it were getting tired and I had some extra funds kicking around. None of them bent or failed. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/22/2016 02:04PM by Andrew_Frick. |

Assuming you are off by the same sort of % as the above estimate, that sounds just a tad out of the guys range...especially for a complete beginner in essentially a bone stock car.. Great advice. That's funny, your let me google that for you returns no results. I said regular, not HD. http://www.amazon.com/Bilstein-22-044204-Replacement-Suspension-Assembly/dp/B009FU4MDM If you're going to run cheap stuff, make sure it's cheap. http://www.amazon.com/Bilstein-24-020275-B8-Shock-Absorber/dp/B009FU4WQO?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00 If you have Prime and get free shipping, you are at $300. $350 must have stuck in my memory as our wholesale cost, $300 from internet WalMart. I wasn't advising Reiger's, just letting him know they're out there. Grant Hughes |
