Yesterday the Quattro Squad accidentally took the engine and transmission out! Well, it wasn't a proper accident; just that it wasn't part of the evening's plan. Being a little light on peeps and wanting to have an early night we only planned to prep for engine removal. Instead it just sorta happened as we were on a roll and we still got out of there by 8:455pm. Not a bad night's work.
image by Team Illuminata Motorsport, on Flickr Being a Quattro it comes out of the bottom with the sub-frame and transmission. Being a Quattro it doesn't just drop straight down but instead has to be quided past several obstacles on the way down. This is not a Porsche 911. image by Team Illuminata Motorsport, on Flickr Nice job gentlemen. image by Team Illuminata Motorsport, on Flickr Toothless grin image by Team Illuminata Motorsport, on Flickr The right side engine mount fell apart; as they do. image by Team Illuminata Motorsport, on Flickr And this doesn't look exactly pristine. image by Team Illuminata Motorsport, on Flickr transformation by Team Illuminata Motorsport, on Flickr Paul Eddleston BRAID Wheels USA www.BRAIDUSA.com Team Illuminata Motorsport www.teamilluminata.com |

The Ur-Q came stock with a K26 on it? When I was an apprentice at Porsche in the mid 90's, we used to pull K26's off of grey market 930's to replace them with K27 and K27"S" models.
If I knew that was the standard Ur-Q turbo, I would have kept a box of them, instead of tossing them in the recycle heap. I remember bringing one box to the scrapyard myself in either late 94' or early 95' with over 2 dozen of them in it. Great progress. She's coming along nicely. |

Thanks for the input Daniel. I guess now we have an excuse to "upgrade" Would the K27 or "S" be suitable do you think? Paul Eddleston BRAID Wheels USA www.BRAIDUSA.com Team Illuminata Motorsport www.teamilluminata.com |

Paul, I have a k26 (might be a 24 I'll have to check) sitting on the shop bench. Came from my rally car, Could probably use new seals. last I looked Refresh kits including new journal bearings were about 60$
Lemme know if you need it. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 11/14/2016 01:24PM by aj_johnson. |

Paul;
Like all things "KKK", you have to worry about the indexing. The K27 and K27S that the Porsche shop used may not be able to be mounted to the Audi. Even the K26 you have pictured may be very different than the standard K26 on a stock 930. You would have to check the FULL part number on your turbo, against the microfilm or microfiche from Porsche to see what part number they used. The good thing is that if those numbers match up, than the port spacing, bolt spacing, and flanges should all match up as well. I know with the change over on my Audi TT engine going into my GTI, if I want to upgrade turbos, I have to be careful to use specific part numbers to the GTI/TT, versus the A4/A6; because one series is for transverse engines only, and the other series is for longitudinal only. |

I thought the 930 ran the 3L something or other, and the 10vt ran the 26-2664. There are some various hotsides available for mix-n-match shit but if you are going to start hunting for that kind of stuff, I'd give up before you start and just run a nice modern turbo. Probably won't be much of a price difference by the time you are all said and done, and finding replacements if you ever break it is going to be rough. Plain jane audi k24/k26 are interchangeable and easy peasy to come by. |

Almost a month since the last update. Boy does time fly when your'e having fun. In this case the fun was a visit to the BRAID factory in Barcelona including a few laps around the F1 track there in BRAID's Ligier LMP3 car.
Album here if you're interested. https://flic.kr/s/aHskQ93ZSB We also went to Germany and visited the Porsche museum in Stuttgart. https://flic.kr/s/aHskQ2wchj So you see, we have a couple of good excuses. We have been busy on the quattro though. In fact we managed to get it onto the trailer and drag it up to http://www.thompsonracingfabrication.com/";]Thompson Racing Fabrication to get caged, restored and painted! It took a bit of engineering to get it off the lift but we managed alright. One more pair of hands and we could have just lifted it but this method worked quite well too. image by Team Illuminata Motorsport, on Flickr Looks good on the trailer image by Team Illuminata Motorsport, on Flickr image by Team Illuminata Motorsport, on Flickr It's going to be in good company up here. image by Team Illuminata Motorsport, on Flickr New temporary home image by Team Illuminata Motorsport, on Flickr So maybe it will be caged early January then http://cherryclassiccars.com/";]Cherry Classic Cars can work their magic fixing the rust and preping it for paint. There are many other fabrication tasks to take care of, some of which require body panels etc. but we are not ready for those yet so the shell may be up north for some time. Still, there's plenty to do back at the shop, like sorting out all the parts we took off and deciding what to keep and what to sell. Stay tuned. I'd put the cage in first to keep the frame straight then stitch it up and add any additional plating. That's also the consensus of Ford and the cage manufacturers, I'd probably put it on a frame table to make sure its within specs before putting the cage in, never know who has dinged the car in the past.... Yes, it's a Ranger. Xr4Ti, it is rwd and was made in Germany. |

http://www.thompsonracingfabrication.com/";]Thompson Racing Fabrication have begun work on or quattro shell. They began by removing and patching the old cage then removing all the sound deadening and various bits and bobs that we (hope) we don't need.
