Antlerectomy The Movie
February 11, 2008 04:52PM
I finally got around to modifying the front knuckles for my GTX brakes this weekend. John calls the stock brake ears "antlers" hence the movie title. It was all really very anticlimactic...2 hours of measuring, setup, and programing followed by 6 minutes of actual machine time. I was really surprised by the core shift between the left and right sides. The first one came out dead center on the casting pads and when I mirrored the program for the opposite side it was off by a good 1/8". It's still going to work fine though.

Here's a stock one:

And this is a machined one:

Looks good Tim.

My favorite part is when the first antler gets ectomized.

Made me question whether it should be Antlerectomy or Antlerotomy.

-ectomy

1. Removal of.

-otomy

1. A division, or incision.

You nailed it!

Ectomy made me think of having my nuts cut, Otomy made me think of having my brain removed. Which would be better for the world? That's a good question.

Sure was niceof them to cast in those two pads for you to work with -- is there a factory Mazda which uses the shorter Antlers?

Cheers, Ted

Dude, those are definently crab legs. If you look close enough, you see thats totally a 3 armed crab, hahaha. Or I need more sleep.

So the GTX brakes have a longer caliper then? Why do you have to do this?

Cause he saw Derek Bottles brake set up which I invented 5-6 years ago that was just so Sooper Bitchin doing this very chop it off and make a machined adaptor that he knew he just had to do it, cause Tim is a Sooper Bitchin sorta guy.

Timm, brakes are really the most important system in the car for GAINING a edge on other guys.

And the sliding pin calipers hung at the end of a spindly withered branch of iron is too appalling to be believed.

So a little zip zap zing and presto, done.
I still haven't given up on making some better brakes for Toiletta Commodahs.

Rumor has it (this is the internet after all) there is a Protoge knuckle which has just the shorter bolt tabs, but the steering arm is also shorter, throwing off the geometry. I traded about an hour of aluminum welding for the spare knuckes so I came out ahead on that front. No junkyard hunting and he brought them to my shop for me.

Tim(dazed driver),
The reason for removing the antlers is due mostly to packaging constraints under 15-16" wheels. Tim's using radial mount calipers.
If you're not familiar with caliper mount styles, radial mount calipers slide down onto a pair of bolts which run parallel with the rotor surface and are fastened on the top of the caliper with nuts. The radial mount style is more race inspired.

Factory calipers have the lug mounting, which is more common to production cars. If there was a lug mount caliper with the correct hole spacing that might work on the stock antlers.

But if he bolted the bracket for the radial mount caliper to the antler location, he wouldn't have enough room to keep it under a 16" wheel. Might get away with the radial mount on a 18" wheel or something like that. But removing the stupid antlers moves the bracket location further down toward the center of the axle and gives way more room to pack components in to a tight location.

Here's examples.

-Top is a lug mount style.

-Bottom photo is radial mount style.
