Do OZ Rally Wheels = Good Rally Wheels ?

Especially the "Superturismo WRC" model...

I'm just not sure, but I do know that they would look tasty on the car I'm building.

Thanks,

Dan

GENERALLY they make excellent strong wheels when they call them "Rally" wheels. Can't say about street wheels used on gravel as I understand they do a different heat treatment on rally wheels, gotta take your chance, eh.

I have a set of those that I use on my GTI (superturismo WRC), they sure are purdy, but I question the strength. When I bought them I figured an OZ wheel should be at least as good as some of the junkyard stuff I usually run, even though they are only designed as the street version cosmetic copies of the real OZ rally wheel. Well I taco'ed one pretty badly at the first rally I used them at last year, I had to change the wheel on a transit. I just noticed a few days ago that there is also a flat spot in the other wheel that was on the same side of the car as the one that was destroyed. Granted, the rocks I hit also shattered an inner CV joint that put me out of the rally less than 200 meters after I changed the broken wheel. So it was a pretty big hit, but still, it was the first time I've had to change a flat during a rally since 2002.

Oh, and yes, I do have a clutch plate diff, gripper actually, so you might be thiking "why couldn't you still drive out of the stage?" It was in a really soft sandy area, and the drive wheel was spinning like mad, but it was just digging a hole in the sand, the car wouldn't budge.

OZ only sells the super turismo and WRC super turismo rally wheels--both are TARMAC wheels. The WRC (white) version is a bit heavier and has more material in the spokes...

OZ stopped selling their gravel wheels a while ago--at least I haven't been able to find any. They looked like the compomotive CH's I think. They used to make the gravel wheels for VW Motorsport.

Hi John,

Thanks for the welcome. I'm still alive, although sometimes I wonder if it's really living, ha! I haven't been around much the past few years because I've been travelling so much for work. I'm getting pretty sick of it though, and I'm hoping to make a change that will keep me at home and let me get back to living like a real person fairly soon.

The wife and I are expecting our first this summer, so I've got a new co-driver for this season. We are hoping to get out to all of our regional events up here in "you have to sell you soul and work 16 hour days to make $100,000/year just to barely scrape by and keep a roof over your head thanks to our friggin' stupid super heated oil driven economy" land. AKA Alberta.

I'm trying to get the car ready for the Cochrane rally coming up in mid march, hopefully I'll have all the bugs worked out, we've had lots of mechanical problems over the past several events. I just need a few events to get back in the groove, then I can call Derrek out for another epic 2wd battle! ahh the memories.

I have been using stock OZ alloys from Lancer RalliART Edition on my Galant since 04.

I beat the shit out of them, fuckers don't break, they bend rarely, but do not break. Out of 20 or so i have/had I broke only one and it broke from the inside rim when I rolled, don't ask me how. They are cheap to replace, any Messican tire shop has a bunch of them for cheap here in AZ and I don't feel bad when they get scratched or nicked.

Brent, we need those rims on the GTI!!!!

We'll just have to drill out a 4x100 pattern, you're cool with that right? =P

But on the topic of rims, any thoughts on the Team Dynamics wheels? I've been considering splurging on better rims. The TD wheels seem to be well priced compared to Compomotives that I'm considering. Thoughts? (looking at 15x6)

I've heard nothing but good things about the TD wheels. No personal experience (I have Compos) but a bunch of gravel crew guys have them, hever heard of one bending. Ask Scott G at Placar, he probably has some more insight.

We run TD's on the Focus, that was the spec wheel for the Spec Focus, no problems no complaints so far. Burak had a shit load of trouble due to punctures and shifter mechanisms at 100AW he told me that he drove on the wheels a few times so I am eager to see the carnage.

Um, might be easier to drill out the GTi to 5x100... winking smiley But, hell yeah! I'd add them "to the cause": got 5 of 'em (4 currently w/ Hakka WR's mounted).

Moose: when're you next expected at a CRS event?

Brent.

PS: DON'T LIFT! :-)

I don't do RA events, if things work out I may do Gorman and Prescott. Other than that I am codriving for Burak at NASA East Coast events.
