What year/model Subaru front strut mount will work for a 1986 VW GTI MK2?

Maybe post a link and description, please?

I plan to get JVAB rally suspension in the future.

Thank you,
Kristof

Anyone know the inside diameter? Will it fit a Bilstein HD strut mk2/3 as well?

You will have to machine a spacer to run a Bilstein HD in the Subi top mounts. I think there is a 4mm or so difference in diameters.

Of course I know it, but I won't tell you until you edit your name and location.

Now, I dont remember what the mk2 strut tower looks like.

It looks like you modified the top and the sides to strengthen the strut tower to accept the roll cage? correct?

I believe that's an entire replacement for the top.

Subaru and Burmeister both mean cutting the sheet metal to get a flat surface to attach them.

That car was done like that to raise the point the top mounts hit the tower---because that guy got some nice suspension that was about 210mm travel... that was up from the "normal' Bilstein yellow things which were right at 160mm travel---so 2 full inches more travel..

More travel is good.smileys with beer

You have long travel suspension?
Or want to lower the car?

Or are you just after the top plate?

Well, I've upgraded to the vr6 style mounts and they are a piece of crap. I still haven't fixed the issue of clacking in the front. The top hat is an inch or two above the body and whenever the suspension drops, it creates a clack sound and is unsafe.

So, I wanted to get burmeister, but then I read about the Subaru mounts and I'd rather go that way. But I also need the plate, and I don't know how I would be able to make something like that above.

I plan on getting JVAB suspension.

Kris, I type slow and mistype a lot, you know, cause I've been a machinist of mechanic since 1970 and have big manly strong hands, a handshake that crushes the majority of guys most of who are girly-men, so i hate typing

Too many questions about what you now have, but do this. Call lets see what you have and what can be done while making sure that we don't creat problems for later or make you spend money twice...
I've re-done an awful lot of guys who have the ordinary VW Bilsteins and saved collectively thousands of bucks...and one easy thing to do is to chop up the threaded pin and shoulder as they come to work with my upper spring seats---this saves a lot of Over All Length, so we can get more travel in a same length package.

Talk to me.

I'm going the subaru mount direction and getting the spacer and bilstein's JVAB'ed as we speak. I grabbed some strut tops off a car at the junk yard, it might have been a forester? Like John said, it looks like all the subaru tops are the same after '88. The junk yard bearings are like new compared to my vr6 bearings that have seen about 5 events. The junkyard tops themselves look like they came from well... a junkyard but that's cool with me.

I haven't drilled the holes yet but I don't think cutting the top off will be necessary. It looks like the suby top should fit right in. The picture shows my high-tech template. The holes that are shown are from my old strut bar, which doesn't fit since I did a ABA swap. I plan to fill those in. If it turns out that the tops will need to be cut, I'll try to remember to post on here again.
