OK,
Kevin is putting a toyota axle under his volvo, I'm putting a volvo axle under my toyota. I was planning on running my 14" wheels, but; volvo rear brakes won't quite fit under 14s, i don't want to modify axles (hole patterns and hub center) and brake hats. in front, i was working on getting lotus elies 2 piston monoblock calipers under 14s. also a lost cause. I'm stepping up to 15" wheels, $5more per tire- not bad. I expect there will be more mass spinning around and up-down too. so, i'm asking for help from tim the machinist, and john L, jvab, and Kevvie. which volvo wheels am i going to scrounge up? i'll pass on lotus brakes $399 each caliper-pretty, i've have RX7s hanging $50. what size master cyl do volvos have? how much machine time to run 3 or 4 front hubs? what else am i missing? After reading this like 3 times I think I understand what you're asking. Please correct me if I have this wrong.
-Volvo Dana 30 under the ass end of the car w/hydra-lok or welded diff and stock brakes/bolt pattern on the axles -moving up to 15" rims that have the Volvo 5 lug and PCD on all corners -you want to machine some new front spindles to change the front bolt circle to match the rear -hang some RX-7 4-piston calipers on the front knuckles If you're happy with the brakes right now the easiest thing would be to get some custom rear axle shafts made for the Dana 30 to make it match the front. What's the impetus for trying to do it the other way? It's entirely possible...possibly even desirable but it seems like a lot more work. Tim |

I am probably missing the point, but most volvo 240s came with 14 in. wheels (except the turbos,)so they should work just fine, unless you are talking about the rx-7 calipers, in which case just use the volvo ones, they kick ass.
This reminds me of the guy I met who was putting a honda motorcycle engine in some tiny old brit sports car, he was keeping both the tranny on the motor and the one in the car. He was planning on having two gearshifts... -Al |

Thanks, Yes you have it right (98%)

If the Volvo rear brakes fit (comfortably) under 14s, yes, custom axles would be easier. Volvo, Like SAAB decided 15" was a good standard in the early days. Like Timm found out, there isn't a decent way to squeeze monoblock calipers under 14" rims. JVAB will tell us that he has done it, and he has. on a corolla it would take custom hubs. while we're at it, we can make the hubs fit the volvo wheels, and put a cheap available disk where ever I need it to line up with mazda caliper, and eliminate the need for wheel spacers to clear the struts. There would be one custom part, the hub, and it wouldn't be consumable (I hope) vs. a custom rear axle, custom rear disc hat (consumables). plus more room for brakes all around, plus a tire size that i could get used, if I needed it, but perhaps more importantly, IN STOCK when I need them. (vs the run on 14" tires during this year of the GP2) "I put the hurt on dirt" - adam crane http://CraneRallyCrew.com corolla gt-s "Patches" Op: S.S. |

It doesnt take custom hubs, it takes buying new calipers and not using junkyard parts. It's perfectly possible... only reason I dont want to... More 15 inch wheels available, and more clearance for gravel. The calipers fit fine. Infact, if I used an ultra light or compomotive rim, I'm sure they'd fit GREAT.

My 240 wagon is on 14" alloys right now. You can safely assume that any Volvo 14" will will fit over stock 240 front or rear calipers and rotors.
On my brake setup I have stock rear calipers and Mazda calipers on the front. The master cylinder sizes are .625F and .700R. I downsized from .700F and .75R because I thought the pedal was way too stiff. It's better now, but still fairly stiff. Not spongy like stock Vovlo brakes at all. Monika Hawkinson Seattle, WA |

Damn it Twice, i could have sworn, that volvo's (all of them) were on 15s.
not the case. so, i'll look into volvo front calipers under toyota wheels, and re try the rear wheel. Kevin, thanks for the MC info, and oddly enough, the Wheel info too. Is it correct though, that your rx7 calipers are under 15" wheels? "I put the hurt on dirt" - adam crane http://CraneRallyCrew.com corolla gt-s "Patches" Op: S.S. |

You do not want to fuck with the fucked up fucking Volvo fucked up 2 separate circuits in the same fucked up cast fucking IRON pos fucked up calipers for fucks sake. They weigh nearly 75lbs each and have 2 hoses going in, one for one side and one for the other, and their pad is kinda small. For fucks sakes if you want to fuck with something other than the Mazdog calipers and don't mind iron the look at the pick up Toiletta things, they're lighter and larger pad and better piston sizes and only one hose in. I mean why the hell do you suppose I set up Kevins car with the brakes I did instead of the disgusting POS Volvo POS pieces of IRON SHIT? > > Kevin, thanks for the MC info, and oddly enough, > the Wheel info too. > Is it correct though, that your rx7 calipers are > under 15" wheels? Yes, 15" wheels. But also larger rotors than stock 240.
Stock rotor in front, larger 740 rotor behind. Theoretically, you could use the Mazdog caliper and 240 rotors. Monika Hawkinson Seattle, WA Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/23/2008 01:49PM by Sofa King. |
Kevvie/JVL:
Why do you guys always insist on larger brakes? Just curious, since I can't get my 240 to stick on gravel when I brake (I have dual Girling masters and brake bias, so there's like less than 1" travel on my pedal), even with brand new soft compound tires on all corners. We always lock up and then I end up pumping. I can't imagine needing any more brake, unless I was on tarmac going downhill in the summer all day long. You can get around the dual-system thing by going with later model 240 calipers (I think it's 91+ -- may be 88+) for the fronts -- they're single system. Or just put in a different junction box (from the later series) and you'll get two separate circuits they way they're supposed to be -- front and rear. Also cheaper when you break 'em. JVL, I would have called you but got sucked into a BBQ thing last night and now I'm doing taxes. I'll try later in the week. ...Brian... |

While i've never had a problem locking up the brakes in the corolla,
I've found I can go faster threshold braking in a straight line (imagine that) in those nice clean spots the heavy subarus leave. Pedal feel is also something i'm looking for. Firewall flex is happening, i've seen it a little, but i run the vacuum assist. the rest of the flex is the calipers themselves. the rear toyota's have a nasty way of rusting up the sliders, and coming in slantwise to the disk. monoblock calipers. I've also bled brakes at almost every service, because we over heat the tiny brakes on tighter stages, and at Wild west where we could actually get some speed on the straights. GT-S brakes (front) are the same as the stock corolla, designed to fit under 13" wheels. GT-s has rear disc brakes, also designed to fit under 13s. I use Ford "470" high performance fluid for $4./qt. Kevin, i'd like to check out your volvo sometime. John, do you have a volvo strut hanging out? "I put the hurt on dirt" - adam crane http://CraneRallyCrew.com corolla gt-s "Patches" Op: S.S. |

'member what I say about bikes? Keep it strasight and perpendicular to the ground and you can really brake hard. > > Pedal feel is also something i'm looking for. > Firewall flex is happening, i've seen it a little, > but i run the vacuum assist. the rest of the flex > is the calipers themselves. the rear toyota's have > a nasty way of rusting up the sliders, and coming > in slantwise to the disk. monoblock calipers. When you ditch the vacuum assist you'll have to push harder, then the flex becomes a bigger problem, I've seen the master bobbing 8+mm on a Corolla or two. Maybe adding a spreader plate maybe 3/16" might be worth corn-sidering. > > I've also bled brakes at almost every service, > because we over heat the tiny brakes on tighter > stages, and at Wild west where we could actually > get some speed on the straights. > GT-S brakes (front) are the same as the stock > corolla, designed to fit under 13" wheels. > GT-s has rear disc brakes, also designed to fit > under 13s. > I use Ford "470" high performance fluid for > $4./qt. When Dave Clark, Me, Paul Morgan, Rick DelaMere and Gary Reynolds service for PGT Champions Niall Leslie at Olympus WRC, he bled brakes also at every service. found a house in bellevue.
we will be warming it saturday evening. 7pm call me or my friends if any one would like to show up. email is username@gma il .com hot tub should be running. adult beverages should be brought for your enjoyment. got offered an interview at PACCAR in mount vernon - same place that my spitfireefi.com buddies work. had to turn it down- to far from home (now). i recall awhile ago there was a "big brake" kit for the corolla where some kid made bearing adapters to fit rx7 (2nd gen) hubs on a corolla spindle. how similar are volvo and mazda hubs? I may just have to get some to check. "I put the hurt on dirt" - adam crane http://CraneRallyCrew.com corolla gt-s "Patches" Op: S.S. |

Their disc size is pretty good, and would be just the sorta over capacity we want when beating on sheet. Grab some. 5 bucks each at Pull-a-part in Lynnwood---now just a quick 12 minutes up the road from Bellevue for you. > > > > "I put the hurt on dirt" > ex. madmann28 > adam crane > bellingham wa > corolla gts > bs. from VRI @ WWU John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember!
