A pillar gussets
May 02, 2008 02:21AM
Where or how can I get some of those fancy looking hole poked gussets for the A pillar? The windshield is off so I want to do it before I put it back on. I also flocked the dash while at it.

Tim Taylor made some too.

I make my own.
Paul its like 16 bucks from "Mittler tool" for a punch set, and you simply sheap a square and snip off the corners and hammer it round a tube. QUICKER to do it yerself, eh?

Tim also made some nice templates.
The punch is actually like $80-90 from Mittler Bros.
You can search for the thread on here to find info on making them and the templates. I've also put Tim's up on my server so I can always find them.

like these expensive trinkets from the UK?

Ya, make them yourself. The Mittler flaring tools are good but now that I've used both types I prefer the tools from Light Racing. You can get them here:
http://www.polyperformance.com/shop/Dimple-Dies-p-1-c-901.html
If you don't have any way to punch the holes first then you are better off with the combination punch/flair tool from Mittler.

I just realized too that you meant the a-pillar to windshield bar. I was thinking you were talking about the a-pillar support.

Checkpoint Racing sells them, for around $80 or so.

Cool, I though those dimple die sets were beaucoup money. I'll just get some from Grant for now then buy a set of those later.

Donjer. It's stupidly easy. Take dash out, clean it, brush on the adhesive, apply the flocking fibers, dry for 24 hours or so. Cost is about $20 for the kit or so.

is flocking really all that necessary? Or are some dashboards just really worse than others for glare?

There are a few things that make a rally car a rally car. Dash flocking is one of them in my mind. Kind of like mudflaps, gravel tires, and such. I don't care about the glare. But then again, I also don't bother washing my windows most of the time either, unless it's really bad.

XRatty glare is bad, as in not way bad but shitty bad.
Of course flat black spray paint could cure that but maybe it's a bit too ghetto.

I just dont clean my dash with armorall. If i have to clean I use a touch of diluted windex on a paper towel. No glare on a sun beaten, never armoralled 20 year old vw dash.

I'm basically of the same mind here. There's no real need for this on my rally car, but it will make it feel so much more like a rally car.

My other motive is to extend the life of crappy cracked Japanese dashes from the '90s. My '89 Nissan Siliva has the grand canyon running through it. I can now bondo the canyon and flock the whole thing, masking my sins.

well, if its part of what makes a rally car, a rally car, I guess I'll just have to flock the fucking dash then! (at least its cheap...)
