Quick rack options?..thoughts from other brick heads
May 06, 2008 03:55PM
So I came across this thread over on turbobricks

http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=76448&highlight=steering+rack+lock

Quaife 2.5 lock to lock conversions for the zf manual racks.

$275 + shipping + rebuild kit + zf costs

Looks to be expensive but would certainly be an improvement over the yacht style response the turd has now and my still be less than other options. What is it Lane has again?

there is the option of steering quickeners but those seem to add an unnecessary link in the chain. Just one more place to fail and I still wouldn't have a freshly rebuilt rack.

So what have others done with these pigs. What options am I missing?

Search for a roundy-rounder steering quickener.

Actually, that is a pretty good price for the piece. Only thing cheaper would be to look for factory options as far a ratios go.

By the time that everything is said and done, the quickener may end up close in price.

If you can do a quicker rack for $300, go that route rather than taking the time to buy, fab, etc. a circle track setup. The nice lightweight aluminum housing units, compact with 3 bolts is about $175, plus need to get various couplers and splines, etc. ends up being $250 or so just for the parts.

Hey I said to youse galoots that Turbobricker "Fidel" aka Lawrence Knox is deep into making 2,5 turn POWER rack gut kits.
WE, Fidel and I have been co-operating on various goodies and this is one.
When the guts are done WE'LL send them off to where i sent John Lane's stuff and have it built into racks and fully tested at a well know OAFISH-al rack rebuilder.

Powersteering is worth for skilled drivers about a second per km or 1,6 seconds per mile in back to back tests.

It lets you run more castor---if you have the means to dial in castor, and that means a more stable car, without having forearms like Popeye.

GET WITH THE 80s, boys.

power steering would be ideal. Already have a rack, pump, plumbing. So cost, if anything, may be lower.

Got an idea on target dates or cost with the power units, JV?

Trying to get somethings actual done and avoid the waiting game. roundee bout set up might be better in that aspect

John, still wanted to talk to you about the T5 give me a call sometime when you have a chance

Personally, I would suggest that you call John when you get a chance. Otherwise, you'll NEVER get to talk to him.

Yeah. Guess I'll give him a ring then. Kinda what I expected.

Kevin. Have you felt the need to address this with your brick yet or are you waiting for the power rack John's.

Everyone of the projects John speaks of sounds like the best solution to the problem at hand but I would really love to get out on stage with in the next ten years or so.

spose this is something that could be upgraded in the future after logbook and a couple events but as it is now I feel like a one man relay team. My hands haven't been this busy since JR high

Patric that's the beauty of a 240 or an Xratty and to a lesser extent say Jap rwd cars with rear mounted racks:
You CAN do stuff piecemeal.

Indeed the only way us normal privateers from what I call " the Prole-le-ralliat", the class of people who pay for their stuff from WAGES, is to keep a car MODEL long term and progressively, but continuously upgrade stuff in oorder to spread the economic burden over a longer time-frame.

In the case of the quick PS rack, well get the guts since its an "opportunity buy" then have them built into a rack when you can afford that.

EVERYBODY with slow steering eventually runs into a wall which they know is making them nervous about "keeping up" and not becoming what I call "Hong Kong Kung Fu action movie master" with the steering....ya know? Nobody can see the arm movements because they're so fast and frequent all you HEAR is "wooosh'wooosh wu- whooooos-whhooooosh". And it MAY not be holding them back but its disconcerting and the feeling of THAT holds you back.

20 years ago I supplied a lot of wquick racks to boys and without exception, everybody loved NOT THINKING ABOUT THE STEERING FINALLY.

Well everybody who didn't have a superior car that had quick steering stock (like my 2,2 turns Saab!!! neeener neeener!!)

Yo Patricio!
I haven't been on a stage yet with my car. I've only been working on it for like 8 years now. But I told myself several years ago that rally would have to wait until after college. So, now I have 2.5 quarters left (taking one class at a time!), and the project is kinda picking up steam (after sitting on jackstands for over a year). Barring unforseen emergencies, the car should be back on the ground by Monday.

This is a good thing.

Dad called yesterday for an address, and said he'll be sending them out today via overnight (I think he said UPS red label or something).

As long as they're here by Friday afternoon, I'll be installing this weekend.
I want to take my car to Portland (for the IPD meet) on the 17th, then help Poiki with his T56-to-redblock bellhousing on the 18th.

Yeah, I know this is the same weekend as OT, but it's an RA event, so I'm OK with that.

You can't drive all the way done to p-town and not see at least a couple of stages of otr! Think I will hit up the swap meet early on and then head out to Vernoina. Give me a call if you make it down this way.
