picking the right volvo rear end....
May 12, 2008 02:10PM
I'm starting my junkyard search for the ideal volvo read end to put in the corolla. I'm looking for a 1031. I think they came in 240's and 740's amoung others. I guess all I care about it getting the right housing and axles since the rear diff, and likely the R&P, will be swapped out.

Any suggestion on which year etc. is the cheapest and easiest to find.

I think the 1030 will be cheaper to get r&p.

Search through current/old threads at turbobricks.com for info about the diff.

The 240 and 740 rear ends have different axle lengths.

Actually both the 1030 and the 1031 use a Dana 30 diff and the same R&P, it's just that the bearings are smaller (and the housing slightly different) on the 1030. I think the 1030 was used until 1982. I would shoot for a later model 1031.

You can buy an R&P new for about $195. (Check the price list somewhere like v-performance.com). Or any Dana distributor (ie. off-road shop) should be able to hook you up. I just threw a 4.10 in mine, and that's not a very common ratio for highway-bound 240's.

you are correct on the axle length and diff. but the ring and pinion are different between the 1030 and 1031. the 1030 is a dana 30 low pinion. the 1031 is a larger ring and pinion, that no one in the states currently produces. precision gear sold out of there last run. i'm working with some manufactures to get some r&p's made for the 1031.

so mixed opinions! I was leaning toward the 1031 since it has a stronger case. So the difference between a 240 and 740 rear is the axle length...not the actual housing length? I've been told that te 240 rear end is 1cm longer on each side compared to my Corolla rear end...which is fine but if the 740 is much longer than that, it may be an issue.

It looks like the R&P's are readily available....5.38....ummmmmm ummmmm

Housings for 240/740 are the same casting. It's the axles/half-shafts that are a different length.

I've heard various versions of whether or not the 1030/1031 are essentially the same inside. Since I have broken parts for each, I may tear them down this weekend and take some measurements.

I'm surprised to hear that R&P's are not being manufactured. It was no problem for us to get anything. Considering the Dana30 was used in millions of Jeeps, too, it doesn't seem like there's a shortage of interest in them.
