Master Cylinder Size - Help
July 03, 2008 12:10AM
Looking to upgrade the E30 Bimmers to Wilwood Dynalite 4 pistons and 11 inch rotors from a VW Corrado. Also looking to install bias pedal boxes, and hydraulic handbrakes.

Any suggestions on the proper MC sizes for the bias pedal box? I assume 5/8 is right for the handbrake.

TIA.

Wilson

If you can tell me the bore size and rotor diameter front and rear I can calculate it for you. It will most likely end up with 0.75" bore on both master cylinders but that depends on the caliper bore you choose for the Dynalites. What's the rotor width? I have one extra caliper for 1" wide rotors that I bought while doing research. You can have for less than wholesale since I can't return it and I'm not using it.

Okay, I assumed quite a few things but this will get you really close. The following chart has your current calipers using a standard Tilton dual master cylinder/balance bar setup. The balance bar is centered in all cases. The rear MC is 0.75" in all cases and the front changes from 0.625"-1.125" in 1/8" increments. Sorry but the program doesn't print out nice sheets and it crops the field so even a screen capture isn't really clear.

In order of preference I would choose a 0.75" rear MC and a 0.875" front followed closely by equal 0.75" for both. If you want to go deeper into this we have to measure a bunch of stuff. Is this going to work for you?

Tim

EDIT:

Here is another run that shows the bias bar range for both the 0.75 and 0.875 front MC:

What about the Hydraulic Handbrake

Tim:

Thanks.

Any clue as to whether the hydraulic handbrake should run 5/8 or 3/4?

Not a problem I'm happy to help.

They're usually 5/8 but depending on the length of the handle either one can be made to work. I thought a little more on the MC sizes too. Since you do tarmac rallies you might do better to try the 3/4 front master cylinder first. It will give you a better chance of being in the adjustment range of the bias bar between gravel and tarmac.
