Is this cam terminal doctor?
July 11, 2008 01:02PM
Currently I'm running stock cams in my 16v GTI but I have some 268 sport cams. I pulled out the cams today to get ready to install em and I find this on the intake cam:

I spoke with Techtonics and the cam guy there said that he's seen this before (in fact chunked cams in this way). Essentially the chunk missing is at the woodruff key for the chain sprocket. The chunk likely was broken off when the sprocket was pressed onto the shaft.

Now these cams were run in my car, I removed them and replaced them with stock cams (long story). But, I'm not sure I want to put my engine at risk.

What says yous?

If there is no damage to a keyway, I would smooth the edges and run it. If you want to be extra careful, then use dye to check for cracks around that area. This looks to only be a locating flange to prevent axial movement of the gear. I would not think it would be an issue if enough of the flange is left.

no worries, it happens....I wouldn't even hesitate to use that, the most stress that area sees is when you first torque down the bearings with a new chain....hell I am selling a 276 camset with a sloppy keyway...torque it down tight and use an adjustable cam gear, no worries at all.

I've seen worse used for many years without incident.

Thanks for the input guys. Having input from just a handful of rallyists is worth about three dozen vortexers. Glad to hear that the cam is likely fine. The stock camz are passable, but I'll be happy to get these sportz cams back in.
