Ford 2.3 info
August 14, 2008 07:48PM
So, my friend Alex is leaving the state, and I'm acquiring his spare 2.3 Turbo engine.

Any good no-BS forums with tech on these? All I really know about them is that they're anvils and cheap to play with.

Also it looks like it's got two bolt patterns on the back, am I seeing things right?

Tech on a 2.3 turbo. Add intercooler and boost. Add fuel if lots more boost. Add Cozzie turbo or Holset if lots lots more boost. Start blowing headgaskets.

This forum is probably as low-bs as you're gonna get.

For a basic fun package, get an SVO Mustang computer and VAM, add intercooler and have 200-210hp. Or MegaSquirt it. Haven't gone there yet.

I have a Megasquirt and like it enough that I'd do it again.

Already have a line on a Turbo Coupe trans setup. Also already have a supercharger and a line on a T66 turbo, want to try the twin-charging thing. BOOOOOOST!

Oh yeah, also have water injection.

Probably going to be a bit much power for 2wd and dirt, but it should be a fun street car anyway. Not even remotely rally related though.

You could try http://www.turboford.org/ it's low BS to me compared to most of the other Forums I frequent but if your using this Forum as a comparison you might have some issues. It does have some good tech info and knowledgeable people you just need to learn who those people are and ignore the rest for things that actually matter. Best of all, most of the information people need is archived and search able.

They are cheap motors to play with if you stick to the KISS method. They are plentiful and many ford vehicles had the same block so finding things in the junkyard is quite easy. Pretty good after market support as well.

The bottom end is stout. Forged pistons and rods stock. Good crank. The heads are garbage and flow for shit so your going to need to turn the boost up to make a lot of power and therefore will need a bit more fuel as well.

It's easy with a few simple mods to get 200hp to the wheels and 300hp+ is definitely possible with not much more.

If you start making any more power than that, you will probably want to look into some type of Tuner or Megasquirt.

A good basic setup would be something along the lines of...

Regasket/rering/new bearings.
3" Downpipe.
Intercooler.
MBC set at 18-20psi.
Big VAM air meter with CAI.
PE or LA/LB series ECU.
10-13* base timing depending on ECU.

My setup should do 30-40psi... hrm.

No idea for stock EFI. Instead of looking for hen's teeth I'll just do standalone.

Oh, yeah, exhaust. Duh. 3" from the turbo back, and get the biggest turbo exit you can (JV will pipe up here for a Cozzie turbo).

So apparently turboford.org doesn't like any of my three E-mail addresses, so they won't let me register. Piss on 'em, then. I don't have an ISP anymore, and even when I did, it was just the regular yahoo.com account.

Picked up the trans last night, it's a regular 2.3 bellhousing and a T-bird transmission. Crappy gears but I figure if I don't use 1st ever then it'll probably be just fine. What it didn't come with was a clutch or a pivot stud. The fun part is gonne be finding a clutch for a Merkur so I can bolt up a Mustang bellhousing to a T-bird transmission... at least the clutch linkage will be simple, a couple holes and a Mazda slave cylinder goes on there!

turboford is picking about email addresses. You may also want to try www.merkursport.com A little brand biased BS but otherwise good tech info.

A warning though, you better be a real red blooded American PATRIOT at that site.

In response to a stupid statement by some idiot in a thread about the Olympic Opening Ceremonies, some nameless guy from North Carolina wrote some crap like
"forcing a population to remain in gov't controlled lockstep for so long can make for very coordinated pageantry...

reminds me of footage from the olympics during nazi germany. "

Answer by "Yeah, the ChiCom's are putting on a good opening show. Hopefully we can also in 2010 here in Vancouver/Whistler for the winter Olympics!"

I ask if a single person there had ever sat and talked with a single person working in China, and if they had any idea that using words like "ChiCOMs" could be taken as offensive----as it was by the two Chinese womn in my house.
And to give them a taste of how distasteful words like that were, I called them "Gringos"

Talk about a shit-storm. I got told I'm racist, make personal attacks---for doing the PRECISE SAME THING as they have done---- should be wearing sheets on my head and on and on.

Seems the Good ol boys don't like even an educational taste of what they do routinely.

IF the boys are so knee jerk and rigid as that, there would be VERY FEW who I would think are able to discrinate engine info from chatter or mere repeating platitudes.

I still say...

Turboford over Merkursport

You don't need to join TF to search or read the forums. Like I said earlier most of your questions are probbaly covered via a search.
