JVL supra diff, 3.73?
August 20, 2008 08:26AM
I just picked up an 89' LSD diff from a supra, but the ratio doesn't calculate right. Hope it's the right diff. If so, wheres a good place to get an R&P?

Thanks.

Hi Dustin, been a while, hope you're doing well.

Hey with the ratios, the only thing to do these days---the cars are 20 yeras old and gawd knows what's been swapped in since they all look the same---is to pull the rear cover off and see what you have.

There is a small figure stamped in the rim of the ring gear.
I've pulled maybe 10-11 and only seen 3,9 or 4,3.

So pull the cover, wipe down the gear and tell us what you have, then I can come back with suggestions.

I've done some research and found that the 89' turbos got switched from 3.90 to 3.73. The housing looks the same as your pics. I've spun the imput shaft and counted axle revolutions around 3.7ish.

Well dustin, when I was loooking to get serious about shoving these things into the Xratties, I came accross plenty of PRINT and even people who believed they had 3.73 but I have only actually seen 3.9 in turbo MANUAL trans cars, and 4.3 in turbo autotragic and non turbo manual.

3.73 would be real nice in a street.

4.3 is what you should be looking for with taller gravel tires.

As for replacement R&P's. All I have found is 4.11's and 4.56's. Recommendations as to which ratio to use?

Waht events do you think you will be doing, Justin? And what type of car, engine, and trannie? Turbo or not? (Sorry to not be paying attention...) If you're in Knoxville, and plan to do events like Sandblast, Rally TN, Rally WV, STPR, etc., it's a tossup. Rally TN and SB would favor the 4.11 IMO, but Rally WV and STPR favor something shoter like the 4.56. So it more depdns on the car configuration, IMO.

That's why I say find a 4.3, be good for up to 120 in 4th and use 5th just for transits.

Well, if it goes to 120 mph in 4th, then I would go for the 4.56 for normally aspirated engines. But the turbo would speak for 4.11; that is what I would settle on. You should have plenty of cubic inches and torque with that size of turbo'd engine, and the 4.11 will keep the rpms down.
