Come and watch the Evolution of a Mirage
September 03, 2008 08:03PM
I would like to share my project with you guys over at Rally Anarchy where it will be appreciated. Before I bought this car I searched for months on end to find the perfect shell for this project I had in mind, I found this 95 Mitsubishi Mirage on ebay where it was listed 3 times and each time the buyers backed out. It must have been waiting for me. I drove down to Ohio to pick up the cleanest car I have ever seen. For a little information about this car, This car is originally from Arkansas and spent very little of its life in Ohio before I bought it for 400.00 with 199,000 on the odm.

Here is a photo from the Ebay add.

This here is the photo of the parts car 6/4bolt 4G63, I ended up using none of the parts off this car and sold my half to Dexter.

Zach and I messing with something, thats also my Sebring to the left

Money shot

Thats me next to my truck, on the way down to pick up the Mirage, Dexter's DSM tagged along, because afterwards he was heading to Chicago and I was heading back home with the Mirage

The camera's batteries went dead so you missed out on watching the engine come out. More photos will come tomorrow of the empty engine bay.

I cleaned up the engine bay a little its still pretty dirty yet, here is some more pictures for you all.

And the old 4G15

Dexter working on pulling the dash.

Me giving the bull horns, while removing the rear speakers.

Backseatless

This is me pulling the old seat.

Last night we removed the rest of the dash and engine harness, removed the gas tank, and pulled the heater and AC out. So far total time is 37 hours.

If you look closely you will see me under the car, getting ready to remove the gas tank.

Fady is pulling the hoses for the heater core.

Gas tank removed, looking frontward.

This is after Dexter removed the AC, Heater Core, and Blower fan.

Engine harness removed.

I got some new parts today. This is the first set, we are going to be using them on all four corners. I should be sending them next week to the powder coater. LOL, the calipers still never made it to the powdercoater. Later on you will find out I ended up not using these rotors.

Update for you all, I got my shippment of JDM parts in 2 Days.

Im sure you are wondering what came inside.

I picked this up a few weeks ago

I'am going saturday to TRE to get a Evo3 gear set for it. My rear diff is a Evo 3 RS "Cluch packs" FTW. I never ended up making it out to TRE.

I also got my genuine Mitsubishi strut tower bar. From JonVR4 (Thanks Man)
Coming soon is my Evo side markers from Cusco-AWD  (Thanks Bud)

K-Member, cross member, Evo control arms, and sway bar.
Thanks TKR

Last weekend I removed the old K-member, Lower control arms, and Power Steering Rack.

Out with the Old in with the new, wait a min. What happen to the pics? Oh yeah the camera was dead.

So Thursday night Dexter and I fit the Evo K-member and cross member  in to place.

Last night Dexter, Fady, Zach, and I started to drop in the 4G63 Dummy block mated with the 2Ga DSM tranny. We used the Evo timing belt side motor mounts, The rear Auto mount off of the 4G15 tranny on the front of the  2Ga tranny, The mount on the tranny is off a 1G dsm.

I know that there is a difference between the auto and manual upper transmission anchor mount. Right now the right hand side is sitting back about a 1/4th - 1/8th inch.

Pics to be continued...........

I received my AP 309mm x 32mm rotors today.

Once I finish my 4 x 114.3mm hubs We can start drawing up our rotor hats and brackets.

So tonight I did a little chemistry. But your going to have to wait for the full write up before you even want to attempt this.
I couldent wait to show you what was going on.

Dexter is the man when it comes to autocad, Here he is hard at work

We are designing a brake kit so I can run monster rotors and 3kGT VR4 calipers on the Evolution Project.

Here's the caliper adapter we just designed. This is so I can use the  calipers on my Evo3 RS project with the rotors I have and Dexter can use them on his DSM. It's going to need some fine tuning and We''ll probably do some stress calculations to ensure it can perform like we need it to.

Then we designed the rotor hat so we can stick the monster rotor to the summit hub that I have decided to use. Dexter's hat will be slightly different since it has a 5-bolt pattern instead of 4-bolt. Again, needs some fine tuning to get the offsets and thicknesses right so everything will fit and line up.

Here's a shot of the entire assembly:

After getting all of the bugs worked out with the fronts here, we need to figure out how to make these work in the rear too. Stay tuned.

Just a random whore update.

Expo Front lower control arms very close to Evo3 as your going to get, Currently they are in the clean up stage waiting for nylon bushings

After we fitted the Evo trailing arms I decided I wanted to try some of Dexter's wheels on for shits and giggles.

Test fitting the Cusco Rear lower Tie bar. You can also see some Evo trailing arms.

This is just a random photo because I thought it looks cool

I'll let Bill do an update. Things are moving along kind of slowly due to some unforeseen circumstances with my house and my wife and I not really living there for the past month... So it's kind of hard for Bill to work on this when no one is around. Got some parts though and once things get straightened out, this project should roll along pretty quickly.

Here's another teaser picture:

I can not remember if this is with all of the evo mount, but Im pretty sure it is.

I had to order my engine mounts from EARS motorsports in the UK, 240usd for used mounts. ekk...

Currenty my car is 12 hour from me in Greensboro, NC you can see here it is getting ready for the rear subframe.
I hope to have more updates again, seeing how this is car is going to make a huge jump in progress over the next few months.

I will try to get a better picture of my new pedals. They are a Wilwood dual Brake MC, Reverse Swinging setup

I also have a few other nice bits now, Includeing a TD06-20G Greddy turbo. And Crower forged rods. I will get you guys some pics asap

We are trying to figure out where we want to place the diff at right now. There is about a 2 inch difference between the output shafts for the front wheels to the output on the transfercase. I think we are going to center it between the two outputs.

dang, that is some good old USA #1 fooling around! Thanks for the fun pics. You look like you guys are having a good time. Keep it up. To paraphrase Kevvie' old tag line; don't even think about girls or it will never get done.

That's a horrible thing to say now that the guy already has the car cut up into tiny pieces!
