Transmission woes...
September 07, 2008 06:38PM
Damn thing never stops leaking out the tail housing. First one's leaking, so I replace the seal. Still leaking so I replace the whole tail housing. Still leaks and getting worse. Newly installed cat is right behind it and it smells lovely as the ATF melts off of it. So I've had two different tail housing and three different seals so now I'm starting to lean toward the driveshaft being the source.

No! It's just going to make this week fun. Woke up this morning and went out to the garage and unbolted driveshaft and pushed it all the way in then jacked the car up so all the fluid would run to the back and I'll be able to see if it leaks still. If it's not then I have to find somewhere to lengthen and possibly replace the yoke.
If it is then I get to pull the transmission again and am going to take it and the driveshaft down to Brant Ford's shop, Ace Transmissions, down in Colorado Springs. School and work interfere a little bit with working on the car. Thankfully most of my coworkers are in DC for the executive board meeting. They wanted me to go, but I said no way. Thus I'm able to pretty much come and check my emails and show up and leave whenever needed for the next three days.

Dooooood.
Tailshaft housing have a tail shaft bushing.
The seal on the output thang probably can't do its job if'n the tailshft bushing is beated up, and it likely is beatered up.
Lube to tailshaft housing bushing is by osmosis or sumpin stupid.

Ford DID use the 4 speed version of the box in various 4 cylincer stuff in the 70-80s so there's some miniscule chance to get a bush there.
Now extracting the daid one would pose some fun.

I know and that was what I thought and was going to do until I came upon the spare tailshaft housing that looked nearly brand new and had a new seal in it already. But it still leaks.
If it's leaking when I get home, I'm pulling the transmission. If it's not, I'm pulling the driveshaft and taking it to driveshaft doctors. That'll be a fun scooter ride. smiling smiley

Box is out. Get faster everytime. About an hour with a few smoke breaks and almost no light under the car. Codriver did come and help out at the end. Plan is for new bushing, seal, and slip yoke tomorrow.
Also Dave Kern is loaning me his 02 Duramax and trailer since he's skipping Rally Colorado and keep developing his Evo for hill climbs and Pike's Peak next year. It's getting pretty insane. Fourth overall at last weekends hill climb. Two records beat in two events. Check out his in car.

I don't know shit about T5's but I will say that I had a mystery leak coming from an input shaft seals on a Porsche 944 trans. The input shaft seal would leak every time I drove the damn thing for extended periods. I changed the input shaft seal multiple times, all to no avail. Big pain in the ass pulling the trans multiple times (trans is in the rear of the car, engine in the front).

I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out the problem. Ended up being the vent on top of the trans being blocked. So, the trans would get hot, and vent out the input shaft seal = big F'in leak. A simple fix to replace the vent cap.

Maybe check your vent cap?

I hate dealing with Ford. The parts guys have to be some of the most incompetent I've met and ignorant and they don't seem to have any quantity of info/part numbers online so you can find the part number you need before hand.
The parts guy at the Ford dealer just asked me what the T5 transmission was and what it was out of? No joke.

I said it was used in just about everything RWD until the mid 90s and probably one of the most widely used RWD transmissions ever. I really wanted to ask him if he'd ever heard of the Ford Mustang.

Worst even is when you call in with a part number for them to order and they keep asking "what year is it?" and "whats the vin?" Idiotas!
