Progress on the MFing Gaylant!
September 08, 2008 12:36AM
It's been something like two months since I was dropping Conquest struts off in Prescott Valley for a brother in West Virgina and I've news to report! After spending a weekend last month in Norwalk, Ohio, watching the DSM/EVO guys who aren't as interested in corners as we are at the DSM Shootout, I got sufficiently motivated to get off my arse and put in some serious wrench time on the Gaylant.

You can pretty much go through all the pictures in order in my gallery, but let's just say 195/2000 has gone from this...

To this...

To this...

Rat fenders are just hanging there. The fender supports (for lack of a better word) still need aligned better, and there's just two bungee cords holding it in place right now. The FWD LS we cut the core off has a different front crossmember than the AWD models, so I'll have to figure something out on that front, but I am bound and determined to drive this fucking Galant to Prescott in three weeks.

I may not be racing it, and I may not be doing sweep in it, but fucking a, I want to drive it to the rally. I think it would do me some good.

Cheers. I'm drinking the last beer of the weekend and enjoying a well-fucking-deserved smoke before racking out for the night.

Brian,

I just got done doing this to Malcolm Davies' Talon. The core support on his was only different on the passengers side. The lower 'box' was missing for the support to mount to on that side. We just drilled the old one of the crashed front end and welded it on.

There had been some talk on the Galant board a couple months back when I was picking up the parts, but you know how it can go on the boards. One person is sure it's the same, another is sure it isn't. I forgot all about it until we turned the new core over to get a better angle with the Sawzall.

SURPRISE!

I'm going to ask my buddy what he thinks about chopping the old box to match the new core and going from there. Otherwise, I guess we could fab something up. I'm not too worried about this particular issue as much as I am about driveline alignment. The front motor mount took a solid hit, so I need to closely check out the other three mounts to be sure things are in there straight. I don't want to lose the tcase or something a block down the road because the engine is crooked. It doesn't *look* crooked, but...

I'll try to get some pics up tonite maybe. The Talon was smacked hard , right front, at Portland raceway during Oregon Trails. The RF strut tower was shoved back about 2 inches and up about 1.5 inches. Frame rail was ruined as was core support. FMIC survived, rad did not. Both front and rear bolt in Xmembers actually survived.

Heh. Thanks, Bill. I've been a DSMer for over 12 years, now. Been four of the last five Shootouts. It's one of two times each year when I can get together *in person* with my buddies from the web and hang out. We're 2GNTers. We don't go to race. We go to drink and talk shit and maybe wake up in time for the Q16 finals on Sunday. tongue sticking out smiley

(Oh yeah. And NRP has some bitchin' chili cheese fries. Great cure for the hangover.)

Still have to trim lower mounting points to accept the AWD crossmember, cap high pressure lines for 4WS deletion, and have it all welded, but so long as my welder buddy can make it over here in the next, oh, 10 days or so, this Misterbichy is going to Prescott on the 3rd.

Wo0t!

Good, I can spank you again in my Focus like at Desert Storm. smiling smiley

So what exactly are you doing to it - removing the rear steering by swapping in a Eclipse rear end? Cool.

Heh. Ran out of time and money to do proper, metal IC piping, so I'll be looking into some PVC a la Home Depot tomorrow morning.

The 4WS is just a rack in the back that puts pressure on the typical, 1G DSM "active camber" joints or whatever in the rear. I cap the lines to the rear rack and the system is disabled, while maintaining conventional steering functionality.

Trim braces for welding.
Prep surfaces for welding.
Install FMIC.
Mock up IC plumbing.
Get it welded (tomorrow around 5pm)
Put the rest of the bolts in the fenders, lights, et al.
Top of the fluids.
Print a 3 day tag to get to the rally.
Jump start it.
Go.

Core support has been welded on. 1G DSM radiator is too wide to fit between the inlet/outlet of the SRT4 FMIC I have for the car. Picked up another 1G radiator last night (true OEM this time) to test fit tonight. If it works, all I have to do is plumb the IC (PVC/hose), fill the radiator, cap two high pressure lines for the 4WS system that I'm rendering in-op, and give it a jump.

The lower boxes for the front crossmember did not get welded on. I'm going to just run longer bolts up through them into the diagonal on the core. All of this to be replaced as part of a very nicely designed skid plate installation at a future date.

Going to Prescott this weekend. Taking this car with me even if I have to run it non-intercooled. I should be starting my second job at Home Depot within a couple weeks. Paying off some bills and then investing in the build, imo.

Getting to rallies and a job at Home Depot don't mix well.

I don't know what your talking about. If it hadn't been for my job as a busser at a sushi restaurant I'd never be where I am with my car. Oh wait, I can turn that around though since I did meet my ex-wife at said sushi restaurant and the $10K I spent on marriage shit would have gone straight to the car, which is about what I made and spent on the car from working at the sushi bar. So I suppose it's a wash. Though I can't imagine what a hooker would cost for a years worth of sexual favors. smiling smiley
I should go back to working at sushi bars. The girls were hot for sure.

Getting weekend time off working at HD was never easy for me. If they could have, they would have worked people 10 hours Friday, 18 hours Saturday and 12 hours Sunday and had a skeleton crew the rest of the time. Oh, we need to hire 10 more full timers, but no, you can't have any overtime and why isn't this done?

Sorry, five years working there made me bitter. There are a lot worse jobs out there. Use it to make some $$$ for the car, make some more $$$ so you can afford to enter a few events, then get out while you still have a soul!!!
