re-coating springs
September 16, 2008 09:52PM
I have a set of JVAB suspenders and the bottom potions of the springs are starting to rust, due to the fact that they have been battered by gravel. If I have them blasted, I was wondering what I could/should re-coat them with.

Thanks.

Better than blasting,
get yourself a 5 gallon bucket, some arm and hammer washing soda, a battery charger, and another hunk of metal.
Fill the bucket, put 5 tablespoons of washing soda in, connect the negative to the part you're cleaning, and the positive to the other hunk of metal (steel, preferably with a large surface area, I use an old shovel blade.) Then turn your battery charger on, I use 6 amps, and watch the magic. Well, actually come back in a few hours and check the progress. The rusties magically come off! When done simply shut everything off and rinse off your part. Then dry, prime and paint.

Actually, before you do all that, go fill out the rest of the required information in your profile.

This is the coolest thing I've seen all morning! I wonder if I could put a whole car in a swimming pool....

I've been told that sandblasting springs (by a spring manufacturer) may not be a good idea (after I sand blasted a set of springs). I think a chemical stripping method would be a better idea.

You can. Or you can build a shallower pool to do a Jeep frame.

Realistically gravel springs are gonna be chipped up again, so realistically, wiping them down with some solvent and respraying is all anybody reasonably ought to be doing cause we aren't talking about show cars, are we?
